Ever wonder how burglers work?  How they scope out potential homes as a targets?  Then read on for some informative insights.

  • They may have already been openly invited into your home when they delivered your appliances, installed your carpeting, etc.
  • They leave flyers on your door to see how long it takes for you to remove them.
  • They look for newspapers piled up in your driveway.
  • In the winter, they look for snow in your driveway and walkway without the presence of any car or foot tracks.
  • They will try your doors, windows and garages to see if they are unlocked.
  • They will knock on your door posing as someone they are not; if there is no answer they will try and walk in if the door is unlocked.  If you answer the door, they will rush in and try to overpower you.
  • They will break windows to gain access to your home.
  • If your home has a small safe that is not bolted down they will take the safe with them rather than try to open it there.
  • They will check facebook and other social media to see if you have announced your vacation plans, times and dates.
  • They will check your trash to see if you have valuable item boxes at the curb such as a big screen TV box, computer box, etc.
  • They will walk or drive through your neighborhood, looking through your windows, to see what valuables you have in plain view inside.
  • Once inside they will check dresser drawers, bedside tables, medicine cabinets, under mattresses, etc., for valuables to steal.

They work off of low level intelligence from others that observe and give them clues. No easy answers here as many options all working in favor of the criminal. They generally look for what women are wearing. Expensive clothing, jewelry, and then know that that place, is worth the risk. It also opens up other very dangerous issues of rape, torture, and murder.
Have a locksmith do a security check of all entry access points. Cheap pine door bucks should be replaced with expensive but strong, teak, mahogany, or other tight grained hardwood. Big screws. Must be long. Be certain there is no electric wire the screw can penetrate or sever. How far in security you wish to go, is only limited by your imagination. Even then, a determined criminal, is only stoppable by the prudent and lawful use of deadly physical force.

It all comes down to being situationally aware, vigilant and properly set up defensively. The more you and your residence look like a hard target; the more likely a criminal will be to move on to another person or another home which seems like an easier target.

This is why I plant cactus and roses next to windows whenever I’m able — – they better have chain-mail on if they want to get through my windows, unscathed – I also like leaving a whole bunch of mouse traps in the window sills if I’m going to be gone for awhile – hard to carry as much stuff off, with broken fingers….

Reminds me of a movie I saw where a man put a wooden plank under the window with nails pointed sharp end up. They were sharp and long enough to pierce boots if someone stepped on them. Ouch.

Yes – Fortunately, I’m so broke, no one has ever targeted my home, but I do so love booby traps – more fun than just paying a security company….LOL
