After a disaster situation occurs you can expect the level of violent crime to increase.  Rape, murder, kidnapping, burglary, arson, etc., will be the new societal norm for the criminal element.  You will need to be armed and proficient in the use of defensive weapons.  Not following this basic premise will almost guarantee that you will become a victim of a violent crime and possibly killed at some point.

Insanity will reign in the inner cities and this violence will spread to the suburbs.  Law enforcement will not be sufficiently available to contain the violence so you must have the ability to defend yourself.  For your own personal security firearms become an essential component of your SHTF defensive plan.

If you expect bad economic times, social unrest, escalation of criminal activities, etc., you should stock up on defensive firearms, plenty of quality ammunition and spare magazines as required.  Remember any type of socio-political and economic instability triggers psychological instabilities and contributes significantly to the rise in brutal crimes.

Do not become a target for those who can do you harm; be inconspicuous in your activities and stay out of sight;  don’t attract unwanted attention; don’t become a refugee and never give up your ability or desire to resist.  Develop your situational awareness abilities and pay attention to your gut instincts.  if something feels wrong or dangerous then in all likelihood it is wrong or dangerous.  Stay safe.

I was in a flood disaster. A few thoughts of my own are that yes, there will be a degree of insanity or a very high degree of stress. You can also help yourself by helping others. Most reading the post here, hopefully have the ability to build a fire, and other skills that we overlook and people in general mock us for. In my own experience, though watchful of the situation, and I have plenty of nightwatch experience, what I found helpful was, building a fire. People were beside themselves without modern luxury of an electric coffee maker. I simply boiled up a pot of coffee. The more urbane, refused it. The stout hearted, loved it. By the third day, enough dry wood was given to me that I was now making stew kettles full of boiled coffee. More and more people migrated to me. Boats were pulling up to my bulkhead behind my house. Coffee. So much information and reports of the situation, all centered around a wood fire, and coffee. Made friendships of so many good and very nice people. Were people armed? Yes. But there were only few problems at first and stress did reach a manageable point for most people. Have a skill that is simple, and that people overlook or take for granted. People will depend on you and will rally around you, if that is what you want. I knew of everything going on, within minutes. The offers of food, I did refuse because families with children, and the elderly, had more need, than I believed that I did, personally. Something so modest as coffee, all possible because I have a skill, that most people do not have. Safety in numbers. Everyone was making sure that I was informed, and together, we protected our families, and our property. Firearms, are only one tool in your defensive toolbox, be a skillful craftsman and know how to use the other tools you have, or need to learn and become proficient with.
Also, if you do not hunt, start buying rougher cuts of meat or visit a slaughterhouse to learn certain skills. Your ability to make meat, and to cook, make you a vital person. You then become vital to your community or just to your family, as much as being armed. Think, more like a farmer.

Thanks for sharing. Your experience sounds like the right way to do things unlike what was happening during Katrina; where looting was rampant and weapons were illegally confiscated from law abiding citizens..
