Prepping is one of the most important ways to prepare for anticipated disaster scenarios which might occur during one’s lifetime.  Life can be very dangerous and only a foolish person would deny that it could possibly have a detrimental affect on their own lives.  If you don’t bother stockpiling food, water, first aid kits, self defense capabilities, and a whole host of other necessities; then you have no one to blame but yourself; if you go through a disaster cold, wet, hungry, thirsty, and unprepared.

When the SHTF it all comes down to personal responsibility, self reliance, and the ability to do what it takes to survive.  Your survival plan must be workable; but also flexible enough to constantly adapt to changing circumstances.  Ignore those people who tell you there is no need to be prepared; the government will take care of you, as that is a fallacy and a falsehood.  The bottom line is that you are ultimately responsible for your own safety and security.

Prepping means anticipating and preparing for the disaster scenarios that might affect you and your family; along with determing what preperations, supplies, and skills are necessary to help you survive. A realistic risk assessment is important to analyze periodically as is being mentally prepared for how you will handle a variety of potential survival scenarios.  Prepping is an individual thing and how one preps, why one preps, and what one preps are going to be different depending on one’s mindset and one’s circumstances.  So what are you waiting for?  Start prepping today.

When disaster strikes the options to bug in (stay put) or bug out (leave) can be a hotly debateable topic.  Obviously each type of disaster scenario contains its own risks and there are many variables to consider when deciding whether to bug in or bug out.  Whenever possible and if the situation warrants bugging in, to me, is generally a better option.  Here are a few considerations why.

  • Most people do not have a well stocked, well fortified retreat to bug out to, way out in the backwoods or lightly populated country areas.
  • Living off the land is not as easy as they make it seem on television.  Food will be both scarce and labor intensive to acquire.
  • Roads will be congested, fuel aquisition will be problamatic, and looting and thuggery will be prevelant as tempers flare on the overly congested roadways leading out of the area.
  • If you have to abandon your transportation are you prepared or fit enough to walk a significant distance with your supplies and gear?
  • Bugging out can increase your likelihood of falling victim to predatory groups or of sustaining additional  injuries.

If the situation warrants it is generally better to stay put where you are with the emergency preparedness supplies you have already gathered in anticipation of disaster scenarios.  Follow your survival plan and adpat as needed.  Use the resources you have on hand to survive; and to overcome your obstacles.  You are in familiar territory when you stay put at your home for example and you will have access to all of your pre-stocked supplies and your defensive weaponry.

Imagine my suprise when after doing a little research I discovered that zombies and related zombie themed items are a 32 million dollar a year business in the United States.  From zombie movies to zombie books and everything in between; America is obsessed with zombies and the zombie apocalypse.  What makes preparing for the zombie apocalypse so mainstream these days is that it gives people an excuse to get on board the preparedness bandwagon; and of course there is no guilt in shooting the ficticious zombie hordes lurking around every corner.

Gun manufacturers, bullet manufacturers, and gun accessory manufacturers have been quick to jump onboard with lots of offerings for both self defense for the zombie enthusiast.  Look; whatever it takes to get you thinking about preparedness and self defense is a step in the right direction isn’t it?  Zombies have made survival and preparedness mainstream and cool instead of relegated to the fringes of society.

Since we live in perilous, dangerous, and uncertain times being prepared for any type of natural or manmade disaster is more important than ever.  Looking at “what if” scenarios and how you would handle them is more important now then ever before.  So if zombies are headed your way; at least you can say I’m prepared and I’m going to survive this.  After all isn’t that the objective of any prepper; to thrive and survive.

If and when the world comes to an end; there are some common first aid minor treatments folks need to be aware of which are listed below.  Whenever possible however seek out and obtain professional medical treatment.

Small Foreign Matter In Eye – Symptoms include irritation, redness, pain, inability to open eye fully. Treatment includes flushing eye with water or with an eye wash kit, examine eye to see if the foreign object is gone, if needed carefully remove small irritant using the corner of a folded tissue.

Black Eye – Apply a cold compress to reduce swelling and pain.

Nosebleeds – Sit upright and lean slightly forward, pinch bleeding nostril, do not blow your nose, if bleeding continues apply an ice pack to the bridge of the nose or back of the neck, or apply pressure to the upper lip.

Earache – Hold a hot water bottle or heating pad on ear, control pain with an over the counter medication.

Toothache – Rinse mouth with warm salt water to remove any food debris, take over the counter medication for pain, apply ice pack to face, a topical anesthetic may be applied for temporary relief.

Lyme Disease – Symptoms from the bite of a deer tick include a red bull’s eye shaped rash that increases in diameter daily around the bite, chills, dizziness, fatigue, fever, muscle and joint pain, nausea, severe headache, stiff neck.  There is no effective home treatment for this, seek professional medical attention as needed.

Will you be able to survive if a natural or manmade disaster strikes?  Your chances improve significantly if you have good plans and supplies to deal with your anticipated disaster scenarios. Whether its an earthquake, electrical outage, supply line distribution interruptions, civil unrest, societal breakdown, zombie apocalypse or whatever else you have anticipated; preparedness is essential to your overall survival chances.

Your survival war chest should absolutely include food, water, self defense weaponry, medical supplies, fuel, generator, water purification methods, heat making and light making capabilities, spare on hand cash, batteries, and methods of communications.  Considering that most stores especially supermarkets only carry a two day supply of food; if you haven’t stockpiled in advance, the food that you need, then supermarkets won’t be much help to you once their shelves are bare. Let’s face it if trucks aren’t running; then stores are not being re-supplied which means no food for you.

If you think you are going to live off the land think again.  It is much harder than it looks.  If it was easy then everyone would be doing it.  Many people quickly de-volve into animals when disaster strikes; so you need to become disaster self sufficient, if you and your family are going to survive. Advanced preperation, self reliance and the will and the skill to persevere are essential components to an overall state of disaster preparedness readiness.  So when you review your own situation; are you going to be able to survive?

In a post apocalyptic environment when law and order is non existant and it seems as though it is everyone for themselves; it is important to know good, effective, self defense shooting techniques if attacked.  The following is a recommended method.

  1. Shoot until the threats have been neutralized.
  2. Reload.
  3. Move from cover position to cover position.  Remember cover is anything that can stop an incoming bullet.
  4. Scan to see what other dangers are around you.
  5. Get help from other members of your survival group.
  6. Verify your targets are incapacitated.  If not; rectify that situation.
  7. Self assess.  Make sure you have not been hit or wounded in any way.
  8. Scan your surroundings again.
  9. Wait a reasonable amount of time before moving out.  Don’t just assume that there aren’t more of the enemy out there.  Move out using cover and concealment and minimize your target profile.
