From a survival and preparedness perspective there is a univeral truth about natural and manmade disasters that you will seldom see reported in the media.  To not be aware of it diminishes your chances of survival substantially.  That truth is that while there are many good people who are helpful and kind when disaster strikes; there are also many people who are the exact opposite.  They will see disaster situations as opportunities to loot, rape, maim, attack, assault, rob and kill others who have things that they may want.  They will use disasters to victimize those that they perceive as weaker then themselves. To these thugs you are nothing more than an inconvenient obstacle standing in their way to obtaining what they want and feel entitled to.

So to combat this you need to be situationally aware at all times, you need to know the strike points on the human body that can incapacitate your attacker if attacked, and you need to be proficient with a variety of weapons which can be used in self defense scenarios.  Do not be naive when it comes to your survival or the survival of those you care about.  Self defense is your right and your responsibility.

The following is a very important rape prevention tip to be aware of pre and post apocalypse. Never under any circumstances allow an attacker/rapist to isolate you within a vehicle or an abandoned building.  Isolation allows an attacker to proceed with an attack or a rape at their leisure with little chance for their victim to survive.  If an attacker tries to isolate you in an area alone; there is a good chance they may try and eventually kill you when the attack or rape is over. If any type of bindings are produces such as rope, cord, handcuffs, duct tape, wire, zip ties, etc., you must fight for your life and never allow yourself to be bound; as subsequent rape and possibly death will likely be the outcomes.

Most people today think nothing of opening their doors to their homes in your typical suburban neighborhood when the doorbell rings or there is a knock at the door.  People assume it’s a neighbor, or a package delivery, etc, etc.  While it is still prudent to make sure you know who is at the front door before you open it; post apocalypse it takes on a whole different outlook.

In a post apocalyptic world; should there come a knock on your front door, of wherever you are calling home, do not answer it.  Why; similar to what happens in countries where wars are a common occurrance, once someone hears a homeowner respond to the knock from the other side of the door; they send some rapidly fired bullets through the door injuring or killing the occupant. Then they proceed to break in and take control of the home.

The same can apply when a homeowner looks through the peephole as it is fairly easy to tell, from the outside, when someone is using the peephole.  You can expect the lead to fly in the direction of the peephole once the potential attacker knows the homeowner is behind the door using the peephole for verification.  Post Apocalypse answering your front door presents a whole new series of challenges.

Almose everyone at some point in time has daydreamed about what life might be like in a post apocalyptic or zombie apocalyptic world.  There is no doubt that proficiency with firearms and availability of said firearms will be essential to a person’s survival; when there is no law and order, and the thin veneer of civilization has withered away.  Here are my 5 must have firearms for a post apocalyptic world.

  • An Ar-15 Rifle chambered for either .223 or 556 for close quarters combat scenarios.  My preferance is the the DPMS AP4 Panther Carbine.
  • A 12 gauge pump action shotgun using 00 buckshot.  My preferance is the Mossberg 590A1.
  • A primary handgun chambered in 45ACP.  My preferance is the Smith & Wesson M&P 45.
  • A backup handgun chambered in 9mm.  My preferance is the Smith & Wesson M&P 9C.
  • A long range rifle capable of reaching out to 1000 yards chambered in .308.  My preferance is the Century International L1A1.

Yes, we all know that zombies in television series such as the Walking Dead or in movies such as World War Z are only fiction (for now) but it’s interesting to speculate on the origins and development of potential zombie outbreaks.  So here are some ideas to consider relating to potential zombie outbreaks. Now it’s up to you to decide on their viability.

  • Origins could be the side effects of scientific experimentation pertaining to perhaps biological warfare, or extending the life span of sick medical patients, or could be a new, virulent strain of an already existing virus such as rabies, etc.
  • Outbreaks might occur as the virus is passed from person to person through either bites, or infected scratches which perpetuates spreading, leading to death and reanimation as a zombie.
  • Once infected the body could undergo changes such as shutting down non essential bodily functions and reducing thought processes to primitive levels.  Body temperature might no longer be regulated, and fevers would ensue; reducing the body to a seemingly dead or undead state.
  • Speed of infection would vary based on immune system responses, whether the virus is contracted through a bite or a scratch, and where on the victim’s body the bite or scratch occurs.
  • Zombie movements would be slow, lumbering, and erratic, and they would exhibit very poor motor control and coordination.  We are certainly in for a world of hurt if zombies ever learn to run or to climb.
  • Nerves and tissues would decay, emotions would be gone and zombies would be left with only a basic, primitive drive to feed on human flesh.
  • Zombies would become hyper-sensative to light and sound which in turn would attract hordes of the undead.
  • Zombies can be stopped by destroying their brain.  Rifles, shotguns, handguns and edged or blunt weapons would all be effective in this regard.

In a survival situation the possibility exists that you might find yourself trapped under debris.  If the walls or a building have come down around you and you see a path that will take you to safety then follow it and get out of there.  If you cannot and you are trapped; don’t panic.  Let rescuers know where you are by tapping on a pipe with whatever you have handy or tapping against anything else which will make noise that rescuers can hear.  If you have a whistle with you then use it.  Keep dust, dirt, and debris out of your mouth and nose by covering it with a cloth that you can breathe through; which can also act as a makeshift particle filter.  Do not light a match or use a lighter to see where you are just in case there is a gas leak nearby.

In a survival situation you may have to rely on yourself for minor medical treatment.  The following is a good method for stopping minor bleeding.

  1. Locate the source of the bleeding.  If there are multiple cuts then deal with the worst one first.
  2. Place a sterile compress over the wound and apply firm pressure.  Using pressure is what will stop the bleeding.
  3. If the compress soaks through do not remove it if the cut is still bleeding.  Instead add another compress on top of the first and keep applying pressure.
  4. When the bleeding stops then remove the compress.  Clean the cut with fresh water and add an antibiotic ointment and then cover with a sterile band aid.

So you’ve looked outside and zombies are everywhere.  Here are ten ways to survive the zombie apocalypse if you ever find yourself in that particular scenario.

  1. Stay quiet.  Zombies are attracted to noise.  Even if you want to scream, or shout or yell, don’t do it.
  2. Do not travel alone or at night especially if you are on foot.
  3. Have a safe, secure, well fortified location to live at and stay there.
  4. Have plenty of guns, ammo, clubs, knives, tomahawks and other sharp weapons just in case you have to dispatch a zombie or two from time to time.  Remember it takes damage to the head and brain to kill them.
  5. Have food, water, medical supplies and other essential survival gear already stocked up.
  6. Stay in shape physically, mentally and emotionally.
  7. Be careful whom you trust.  People aren’t always what they appear to be.
  8. Have a primary, secondary and tertiary survival plan.
  9. Observe proper light and noise discipline.
  10. It will be easier to survive if you are with a group of people that you trust; and can be relied upon when the zombie apocalypse happens.
