In any survival situation you will find that some people will behave irrationally and may try to take advantage of chaotic situations.  Expect these people to commit criminal acts; so be prepared to defend yourself and your family.  All of these people will want something from you and many of them will do nothing to prepare; but will still feel they are owed something.  Just because a disaster has ocurred does not mean the attitude of these people will change.

Do not allow strangers to latch onto you.  They can prove to be very dangerous.  Your goal is to prepare to ensure your family’s survival; not the survival of every stranger that passes by.  You must be prepared to defend yourself and your family from those who would try and harm you and steal your food, water, guns, ammo and other survival supplies.  If strangers had the chance to prepare and chose not to, it is not your responsibility to now provide for them.

Your survival skills and your supplies will not be able to save everyone but they can help save the people who matter to you the most.  You must learn to trust your instincts and stay alert, avoid becoming predictable, be observant, familiarize yourself with your surroundings, learn to move quietly in all environments and avoid large groups of people.  In any survival situation your attitude is everything.  Be proficient with using your survival gear and with applying your survival skills and your chances of coming out alive increase dramatically.

  1. Reblogged this on A Few of My Favorite Things…. and commented:
    Something to think about…..

  2. “Expect these people to commit criminal acts…” Just a philosophical thought: Are they criminal acts at this point?

I would say yes there is a distinction. There is still right and there is still wrong regardless of the situation.

      • All is fair in love and war.
I have to agree with rmactsc. Even if society crumbles, each of us is still a product of that society. No matter how callous people may get, what we consider morally and ethically right or wrong wouldn’t change, even if we were forced into doing heinous acts for survival. Now with that said, I think about The Holocaust, American slavery, and The Rwandan Genocide. In each case, the ones involved in perpetrating these crimes against innocent people had to first dehumanize them. Once that happened, criminally right and wrong no longer applied. Scary thing.

        Great post!

Thanks Frank. So may problems, survival or otherwise could be resolved if people did the right thing from the onset of a situation.

  3. From the second I can’t provide for my own, I’m going for what I need.
If the world goes to rat poo and your family is dry or empty what you going to do?
Provide for them any way you can or just sit there listening to your children crying.

Want to follow those rules, laws, and the B.S. that probably put you in the mire in the first place?
Fine starve, go dry, stay cold, walk if you haven’t got fuel.
Me and my own will get and use what I can provide.

If you’ve prepped properly the chances of you being in that situation are minimized. There is always someone bigger and badder on the block so when you try to take from them; you’re more than likely to get yourself killed and then where would your family be? It’s worth thinking about.

      • I look at that from the other way round too.
Yes there are bigger and badder and guess what, they’ll be after you too.

You all prepped out, provisioned, and obviously healthy make for a good target.
Even if you do not appear so when someone is desperate they go looking for anything even if there is nothing to be found.
You? You’ll just be a slight inconvenience.

So what do you do? What you do to counter this?
Would you allow yourself to be tied down by some B.S. legal rules of engagement?
Would you wait until confrontation is occurring to protect yourself for example when someone is fire bombing you out of your property?
After all that would be acceptable to the rule of law. (a law typically derived from morals and ethics).

There again to wait for a confrontation may be tactically unsound.
Some less ethically or less morally bound persons may decide “to do unto others before they do unto you”. (A notion I readily subscribe to).
We are after all talking about real life where sometimes attack is the only sensible form of defense. I’ve always considered (as did my DI) that a target always makes a poor impression so it’s better to be the gun.
