Let’s face it.  Gun enthusiasts all like to have an array of firearms to select from; however you can’t use them all at once and no one weapon is right for every self defense, post apocalyptic, or zombie apocalypse situation.  Mission always dictates weapons choices and as such one should always have their primary rifle, primary shotgun, primary semi automatic pistol, and primary revolver fully functional and ready for deployment as needed.

You need to be well versed in handling your primary firearms of choice and no one brand, make, or model is right for everyone.  These types of individual choices are best left to an informed user of said firearms.  So have you given thought to what your primary firearms selections will be in the event that they are ever needed in a defensive capacity?  If not, now is a good time to give the matter some logical thought.

Most of you know that I am against gun control and the ridiculous measures legislatures continually try and pass.  Here are some of the major reasons why gun control is wrong.

  • Guns are used by law abiding American citizens in self defense approximately 2.5 million times per year or about 6,850 times per day.  That equates to a lot more innocent citizens surviving and a lot more scumbag criminals being stopped.
  • Concealed carry laws have reduced the murder and crime rate in all states where concealed carry laws have been passed.
  • The 2nd Amendment protects the rights of individuals to keep and bear arms.  The right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.
  • Washington D.C. has the most restrictive gun laws in the nation and is frequently the leader in murder rates.  While the murder rate in concealed carry states has decreased an average of between 36% and 49% Washington D.C.’s murder rate has increased 46%.  Generally similar increases in crime also occur in New York City and Chicago which have very strict gun control laws as well.
  • More people die every year from motor vehicle accidents or sports related injuries then from accidental gun discharges yet you never see anyone trying to ban motor vehicles or sports.
  • Gun control laws only disarm law abiding citizens.  Thugs and criminals won’t obey these laws as they are deviants to begin with.
  • Given a choice criminals prefer unarmed victims 100% of the time.
  • Self defense is an individual responsibility which cannot be delegated to someone else.  Firearms with proper training are the most effective form of self defense.
  • If you don’t want to own a gun then don’t own one; but don’t try and restrict my rights to do so.  I suppose you’ll only understand this when someone tries to ban something that you own.  I am a law abiding citizen who owns firearms and does so responsibly.
  • Criminals prefer unarmed victims and gun control is therefore a criminals dream. How about we actually punish criminals instead of going after law abiding citizen’s who are gun owners.  I suspect that would be a much better way to get things done.

In survival situations there are key personality traits which can improve your overall chances for staying alive.  These traits are as follows.

  • Awareness – The ability to be aware of your surroundings at all times (situational awareness), including noticing danger signs, and being intuitive enough to sense impending danger; as well as interpreting another persons body language, determining what various noises are and what they mean.
  • Adaptability – The ability to change your plans as needed and to not fall apart when things don’t go your way.  You have to be able to roll with the changes and not get derailed if plans or situations change.
  • Courage – The ability to have a firm committment to survival and to do what is necessary in the face of danger to remain alive.  Courage allows you to master your fears and proceed ahead with the tasks at hand.
  • Patience – The ability to wait for the right moment before you take action.  Timing is everything.
  • Decisiveness – The ability to make correct decisions based on available facts.  Sitting around waiting for something to happen can often be detrimental to your survival chances.
  • Self Confidence – The ability to utilize your skills and abilities in a confident, positive manner regardless of the circumstances.
  • Mental Toughness – The ability to stay alert, and focused and to know that no matter what happens you will be victorious in any situation that arises.

One of my readers asked if I could post a survival woman of the month.  In other words what they are asking is who would your fantasy survival woman be?  Okay I’ll give it a go.  Here is the April 2014 survival woman of the month for very obvious, visual reasons.

So you’ve survived the apocalypse and now you must (to the best of your ability) endure the day to day struggles of staying alive.  Keep the following in mind to increase your survival chances.

  • Prepare yourself for a struggle.  The reality is that once everything you have stockpiled is gone, you will have to go back to some very basic living.
  • You must develop the ability to be self sufficient.
  • You must be adaptable to change.
  • There will be no Walmarts or Targets or gun shops or gunsmiths, etc.  so you need to have pre-stocked what you will initially need to survive.
  • 12 Gauge Pump Action Shotguns, AR’s and AK’s and handguns all with sufficient mags as needed and lots of ammo will be essential.
  • Your survival is heavily influenced by how you deal with a crisis or a disaster.
  • Take care of what needs to be taken care of.  Even the simplest things left unattended can have significant consequences.
  • Don’t panic.  Stay calm.
  • Establish priorities and stay organized.
  • Stay informed.
  • Maintain a positive attitude.
  • Be aware of your surroundings as things can change rapidly.
  • Know your limitations.
  • Conserve your resources.
  • Failure is not an option.
  • Knowledge and training with firearms will be a critical survival factor.

In any survival situation you will find that some people will behave irrationally and may try to take advantage of chaotic situations.  Expect these people to commit criminal acts; so be prepared to defend yourself and your family.  All of these people will want something from you and many of them will do nothing to prepare; but will still feel they are owed something.  Just because a disaster has ocurred does not mean the attitude of these people will change.

Do not allow strangers to latch onto you.  They can prove to be very dangerous.  Your goal is to prepare to ensure your family’s survival; not the survival of every stranger that passes by.  You must be prepared to defend yourself and your family from those who would try and harm you and steal your food, water, guns, ammo and other survival supplies.  If strangers had the chance to prepare and chose not to, it is not your responsibility to now provide for them.

Your survival skills and your supplies will not be able to save everyone but they can help save the people who matter to you the most.  You must learn to trust your instincts and stay alert, avoid becoming predictable, be observant, familiarize yourself with your surroundings, learn to move quietly in all environments and avoid large groups of people.  In any survival situation your attitude is everything.  Be proficient with using your survival gear and with applying your survival skills and your chances of coming out alive increase dramatically.
