Survival and preparedness are important concepts to master.  The following are some often overlooked survival tips which should be considered.

  • Get in the habit of carrying essentail every day carry gear on you.  It may be all you have if you are away from home and a disaster strikes.  Some considerations to keep with you are your handgun, spare ammo, car keys, folding knife, flashlight and identification.
  • Always stay properly hydrated.
  • Eye protection is a must either by using prescription or non prescription glasses.  If your vision is damaged and you can’t see your chances of survival are greatly diminished.
  • Communications are essential.  Keep in mind that a text takes up less bandwidth then a cell phone call; so if a cell phone call won’t go through due to an overload of the system during a disaster, a text still might.
  • Considerations for emergency shelter should factor in abandoned houses, garages and factories.  There are lots of abandoned buildings which could be used as emergency shelter if needed.  Stay concealad and watch your intended shelter location carefully to ensure it’s abandoned before approaching.
  • Some suburban needs may be different than urban needs when it comes to survival and preparedness and vice versa.
  • Avoid checkpoints as any gear you have may be confiscated.
  • Maintain a positive, confident attitude.  Fear and self doubt will reduce your chances of survival.

Be aware of all that is around you as part of a 360 degree security plan.  Pay particular attention to anything that appears out of place.  Trust your instincts.  Your stomach has no ego so if  a situation makes you nervous or queasy there is a reason for it.  Determine the correct course of action based on a situation and follow through without hesitation.

Your first concern in a survival situation is to stay alive.  Speed is the key in any form of effective combat.  You must have the will and the capacity to act with severity and ferocity when faced with violence.  You are your own first line of self defense.  Avoid violence unless it is the only method avaialble to you to save your life.  Only foolish people escalate violence without considering where it might lead.  It’s okay to be polite and courteous but do not drop your guard for anyone.

You must be willing to defend yourself and your family against anyone who would try to harm them.  Remember that not everyone out there is a hardworking, law abiding patriot.  There are predators out there who have no regard for your life, your families life, or your possessions.  They will not show you or your family any mercy so do not expect any and do not give any.

A weapon in the hands of a coward is useless.  You must be mentally prepared to use your skills in a defensive situation.  You have a right and a responsibility to protect yourself against an attack.  Practice situational awareness and avoidance; know your escape routes and maintain physical boundries as well as using verbal diffusion whenever appropriate.

Most threats to your home and family will come from close range.  If your enemy is within range than so are you.  Never turn your back on an adversary.  Maintain a survivors attitude by doing whatever it takes to survive.  Refuse to become a victim and never ever give up.

Perhaps no armed robbers, or thugs or murders have shown up at your door and you are starting to question whether all this self defense and home defense preparation is really worth the time and effort?  The answer most definitely is yes it is worth your time and effort.  Why?  If you are like 99.99999% of the population you are not psychic and you do not have a functioning crystal ball that will tell you the time and place that danger will strike………….so being situationally aware, well trained and well prepared to protect your life and your property is essential.

Keeping your home, your property, yourself and your family safe are of paramount importance.  Take the time and effort now as the peace of mind you will have later will make the endeavor well worth it.  When danger is imminent you are your own first line of self defense.

When disaster strikes, it is essential that you have a safe and secure shelter.  Your home if undamaged is usually your best source of shelter but the key element is to have or find a place to keep, warm, dry and safe.  Your body when wet makes you susceptible to lower body temperatures and lower body temperatures can lead to hypothermia which in essence kills your cells and tissues and can eventually lead to death.

Two of the leading causes of hypothermia are improper shelter and improper clothing for the environment you may find yourself in.  Factors which are also contributors to hypothermia are the actual temperature, wind speed and being wet in a cold environment.  Eating as we all know is a good thing and will increase your metabolism, which also causes your body temperature to increase so avoid being hungry.  Keep, warm, keep dry and stay safe.

The majority of suburban crimes are considered crimes of opportunity; meaning a criminal comes upon a home or a person that they feel would be easy to rob or victimize and attempts to take advantage of the situation.  Make sure you are diligent about securing your home and are equally diligent about projecting an image of confidence and strength so that you appear to be a hard target to anyone looking to do you harm.

When you and your home are hard targets, criminals will avoid you and your residence and look for easier targets of opportunity.  Strive to keep your home well secured on the interior, exterior and the perimeter and make yourself a person who refuses to be a victim, thus ensuring your personal safety and security.
