When it comes to preparing for whatever disasters you anticipate might head your way; everyone needs to have a good survival plan.  The following is my plan.

  • Assess the threat and respond accordingly.
  • Maintain and review inventory of prepped supplies and keep sufficient quantities on hand.
  • Keep small amounts of bills and coins set aside, as funds through ATM’s, etc., may not be available if the power is out.
  • Food and water are top priorities so make sure there is plenty available.  A 3 months supply per person including for your pets is a good goal to strive for.
  • Guns and sufficient ammo are essential for self defense as well as having proper training in their defensive applications.
  • Proper clothing and available medicines should be ready and waiting.
  • Your reliable vehicles should all have full gas tanks and there should be a sufficient quantity of spare 5 gallon gas cans filled and ready for use.
  • Make sure there is sufficient wood and duraflame logs for the fireplace or woodstove.
  • Make sure there is sufficient charcoal available for the grill.
  • Keep communications gear fully charged and ready to go.
  • Have a sufficient supply of plywood and screws in case anything needs to be boarded up.
  • Stay positive and be prepared to adapt as needed.
  • Do not overlook personal security.
  • Have a working generator available with appropriate power cords and fuel.
  • Remember accurate information is critical.

During times of disaster people will become desperate and will resort to acts of violence and desperation.  An outlaw mentality will develop as some people begin to feel that society is to blame and that they are entitled to things which they are not entitled to.

If commerce becomes disrupted you must rely on your own logistics.  Your goal is to survive a disaster in a better position than those who have not taken the time or effort to prepare themselves.  Make sure you know your limitations.  You must know what you are capable of and under what conditions you are capable of performing these tasks in.

In any defensive scenario; it is important to be aware of all that is around you as part of your 360 degree security plan.  You need to pay particular attention to anyone or anything which seems out of place.  Trust your instincts, do not ignore them as your first concern will be to stay alive.

You are your own first line of self defense.  Based on circumstances the course of action you choose needs to be carried through without hesitation.  When faced with violence, which cannot be avoided, you must have the will to act with ferocity and severity in order to save your life.

It is irrational in this day and age that a law abiding citizen would not carry some form of a weapon.  To choose not to carry a weapon intentionally renders yourself partially defenseless.  Violence is escalating and many attacks occur in fringe areas such as deserted parking lots, alleyways, public bathrooms, stairwells, ATM kiosks, etc., where no immediate help will be available.

The most reliable and powerful weapon will do you no good if a situation demands immediate, decisive action for your survival and you fail to take action.  While it is best to avoid violence; if you are in a life threatening situation you may need to react violently to save your life.  Never escalate a situation which could turn violent until you consider where it might lead.

Many times  disasters occur without warning.  It could be anything from hurricanes, to extended power outages, to violent crime, to societal breakdown, etc.  It is always best to prepare in advance for potential situations which could occur, rather than be caught unprepared if and when they do occur.

Here are some things I consider important enough to prepare right now.

  • Stock up on non perishable food and water now.  At least 3 months worth per person.  This also includes a 3 months supply of food and water for each of your pets.  A cool, dry basement is a great place to set up shelving units to hold these supplies.
  • Batteries; yes you will absolutely need them for everything from flashlights to radios.  Stock up on as many as you can.  I keep mine in ziploc bags which are then placed in lots of empty coffee cans by battery size.  Keep your rechargeable and disposable batteries in seperate areas.
  • Maintain your perimeter security by keeping doors, windows and garages locked, walk your property daily to make sure it is secure and use wireless motion detector alert systems.  Big dogs work well also.  Mine is an Alaskan Malamute.
  • Keep your communications gear fully charged including cell phones and 2 way radios.
  • Obtain proper training and get your pistol permit.  Also obtain proper training in the use of shotguns and rifles as well.  Have your firearms ready with sufficient ammunition available and train on a regular basis with each of your firearms.  There is no such thing as having too much properly stored ammunition.
  • Have a sharp knife, as well as reliable hand tools available.  Also have a sufficient quantity of spare plywood and nails and screws.
  • An 8,000 to 10,000 watt generator is a must, along with a power cord to attach it to your previously installed whole house power outlet and a sufficient supply of safely stored, stabilized gasoline to run the generator. About 20, red 5 gallon each gasoline cans should do it.  20×5 = 100 gallons.
  • Keep well supplied first aid kits available and know how to properly use them.
  • Have a written survival plan and familiarize yourself with it.
  • Did I mention firearms 🙂  Own them, train with them, and become proficient in their use; as applies to a variety of possible defensive scenarios.

During a survival situation you must expect that some people will behave irrationally and without any consideration regarding the safety of you and your family.  They will take advantage of the chaotic situation by committing criminal acts; and trying to take by force whatever items you have carefully prepped.

They will justify their actions to themselves without any care or concern about harming you and your family.  You must be prepared to defend yourself and your family against any thug or criminal who attacks.  You must have the will and the skill to repel anyone who tries to take what is rightfully yours.   When it comes to survival; there are no second chances.

If you think another Hurricane Katrina or Superstorm Sandy or terrorist activity or a whole host of other disaster scenarios can’t happen again then you are sadly mistaken.  All one has to do is look at history to see that disaster scenarios are re-curring events.  With that said you must be ready when disaster strikes.  It’s nice to think that some government bureaucrat is going to be there to rescue you immediately; but sadly recent history has shown that is often not the case.  You must be prepared to survive whatever disasters confront you and that means having the will and the skill to survive and stay alive.  The following are what I consider the most important considerations to be aware of.

  • Bug Out Bag – Have one ready to go at a moment’s notice and make sure it is packed with all of the essential survival components for a minimum of at least three days.  Know where everything in your bag is located and how to use each and every piece of gear properly.  Make sure you are able to carry your bug out bag.  If you can’t make it to the end of your driveway  because it’s too heavy; then how are you going to carry it for miles if it is necessary to do so.
  • Self Defense – Expect, thugs and criminals to go on a looting, raping, killing, assault and arson rampage.  You must have the will and the skill to defend yourself and your family.  This means you need to be well trained in the use of a variety of handguns, rifles and shotguns and be proficient at clearing any weapons malfunctions that may occur.  You need to get back into the fight if your life or your families lives are on the line.  You must develop hand to hand combat skills and also know how to properly fight with knives and other bladed or blunted weapons as well.
  • Prepping – You should prep when times are good so you are prepared when times are bad.  Prepping is like insurance; you may never need to use it, but if you have it and disaster strikes, then you are way ahead of most of the population.  Prepping is a great hobby but should never be done from fear; but instead from the premise that bad things can happen and one should be as self reliant as possible if and when disaster strikes.

Do not go looking for trouble but if trouble finds you; then you need to handle the situation accordingly.  There are no redo’s when it comes to life and death so you must be prepared mentally, physically and emotionally to do what is necessary to ensure the survival of yourself and those you love.  For those of you who are experienced preppers all of this is nothing new.  For those of you who need help getting started with prepping; feel free to reach out to me at rmactsc.yahoo.com or through the comments section of this blog.

When it comes to any type of TEOTWAWKI (The end of the world as we know it) survival situations, there are some common sense survival things that everyone should know.

  • Survival requires proper planning and good gear.
  • Food, water, guns, ammo and other necessary survival gear should be already stocked before a survival situation occurs.
  • Avoid dehydration and starvation at all costs.
  • Have a secure, well stocked, defendable location available.
  • Firearms and knives for defensive purposes are essential.
  • Avoid strange, dangerous areas and strange, dangerous people.
  • Crowds can quickly turn violent and can get you killed.
  • Light and noise discipline when appropriate is essential.
  • People will fight over scant resources.
  • Thugs will try and take what you have.
  • Martial law is always bad.
  • People who thought you were nuts for prepping when times were good will start showing up on  your doorstep when times are bad.
  • Never show weakness.
  • You must rely on yourself.
  • A welfare mentality will get you killed.
  • Trust your sixth sense.  If something seems wrong then it is wrong.
  • Bad guys with guns should be avoided.  If you cannot avoid them then you need to be better armed then they are.

Just a quick reminder to check out your survival gear before a disaster strikes, not afterwards.  Make sure your Bug Out Bag is well built, properly packed and will withstand harsh environments.  Make sure your rifles are properly zeroed for defensive purposes and you are equally proficient with your shotguns and handguns.  Remember an improperly zeroed weapon will basically mean your point of aim will not equal your point of impact.  Go to any range and watch people consistently miss their targets due to improper zeroing; and you will see exactly what I mean.

Make sure you have a sufficient quantity of food, water, ammo, first aid gear, fuel, clothes, etc.  Make sure your survival location is secure, and that your primary and secondary vehicles are fully fueled and in good working order.  Can you build an emergency shelter or start an emergency fire to keep warm?  Check now and make sure that you can, don’t wait for an impending disaster.

Know your abilities; learn all the survival related things that you can.  Know your strengths and weaknesses and make sure you have a good survival plan and a good alternate survival plan.  You must be adaptable to ever changing situations.  Now get out there and test that field gear.

When the SHTF, survival will become the primary goal.  Keep the following in mind should any SHTF survival situation ever arise.  Lightly populated areas will be safer then more heavily populated areas.  You will need to do whatever is necessary to avoid the mass exodus of the unprepared who will flee the cities in search of food, water, shelter, etc, and may attempt to take these things by force.

In the absence of law and order it will not take long for people to revert to their base, savage instincts; so show restraint but if the situation warrants be prepared to use force in a defensive manner.  If the power fails for an extended period of time and food and water distribution is disrupted, expect to see fires, looting, escalating violent crime and massive migrations out of the cities and into the suburbs and rural areas.  Looters will look for easily accessible areas and will bypass areas that can offer strong resistance.

When the SHTF law and order is generally the first casualty.  Be prepared to defend yourself.  If you look and act like a victim you will in all probability become a victim.  Consider your home to be your well stocked survival outpost as the last thing you want is to become a fleeing refugee.

Avoid being caught unprepared.  Prepare properly when times are good so you will be well prepared when times are bad.  Even when society is in complete anarchy people will organize into groups; some good and some bad.  The bad groups are likely to be aggressive and violent so be prepared, be vigilant, and take responsibility for your own survival.

Stay safe my friends and remember the old sayings there are only 9 meals standing between people and complete anarchy and if someone is cold enough, wet enough or hungry enough they may resort to violent behaviors that they might never have considered before.

Knowing the difference between cover and concealment when under attack is of vital importance.  Cover is anything that provides varying degrees of protection from gunfire.  Examples are brick walls, concrete walls, engine compartments of vehicles, logs, thick tree trunks, trenches, rock formations, a freezer full of frozen food items, hillsides, metal dumpsters, sandbags at least 12 inches thick, 55 gallon drums filled with sand, steel doors, concrete parking barriers and telephone poles as examples.  If it can generally stop a bullet it is considered cover.

Concealment provides a place to hide but will not stop gunfire.  Examples are walls of a normal wood frame house, small trees, foliage, darkness, bushes, tall grass, shadows, car bodies, behind non steel doors, tables and couches.  If it cannot stop a bullet it is considered concealment.  Make sure you know the difference; it just might save your life someday.

It’s also important to know the penetrating depths of various calibers at various distances.  Things that might provide protection against a 22LR, 9mm, 45ACP, .223, 5.56 NATO, or a 7.62×39 may provide less protection or at times no protection against a .308, 30-06, 7mm Rem Magnum, 338, 300 Winchester, or 7.62x54r for example.  And if it’s a 50BMG; well pretty much nothing is going to stop that round.   Know your weapons, know your rounds, know the penetration depths at key distances and your odds of survival increase dramatically if the SHTF.
