Choosing Your Post Apocalypse Survival Weapons

It is a good idea to choose what you are going to rely on from a weapons perspective post apocalypse for self defense, property defense and other types of mobile defense.  The following are my humble suggestions.

• A semi automatic handgun in either 9mm or 45ACP
• A 357 magnum revolver
• An AR-15 
• A 12 gauge pump action shotgun
• A long range rifle either in .308 or 7mm Rem Mag 
• A sturdy fixed blade knife

My choices have factored in my particular needs.  Obviously your needs in terms of caliber/gauge might be different.  Choose wisely.

Think About This In Regards To Firearms

If you are currently going through the stages where you’re internally debating with yourself whether or not to legally carry a firearm, think about the following.  How would it make you feel if a criminal had total control; the power of life and death over you and your family with only the criminal having any say in whether you or your family lived or died.   Without having a firearm and a working knowledge of using that firearm to defend yourself and your family you would have absolutely no input into that scenario.  It is your right and your responsibility to protect yourself and your family.  Never forget that.  So get that permit, get some training and practice those skills.

5 Must Have Firearms For A Post Apocalyptic World

Almose everyone at some point in time has daydreamed about what life might be like in a post apocalyptic or zombie apocalyptic world.  There is no doubt that proficiency with firearms and availability of said firearms will be essential to a person’s survival; when there is no law and order, and the thin veneer of civilization has withered away.  Here are my 5 must have firearms for a post apocalyptic world.

• An Ar-15 Rifle chambered for either .223 or 556 for close quarters combat scenarios.  My preferance is the the DPMS AP4 Panther Carbine.
• A 12 gauge pump action shotgun using 00 buckshot.  My preferance is the Mossberg 590A1.
• A primary handgun chambered in 45ACP.  My preferance is the Smith & Wesson M&P 45.
• A backup handgun chambered in 9mm.  My preferance is the Smith & Wesson M&P 9C.
• A long range rifle capable of reaching out to 1000 yards chambered in .308.  My preferance is the Century International L1A1.

Let’s Talk About Shotguns

The 12 Gauge pump action shotgun is the most formidible and effective weapon available for close range personal defense. 

Recommended 12 Gauge Pump Action Home Defense Shotguns listed below.  (Make sure whichever make and model you choose is dependable and reliable and that you are fully trained in the proper use and operation of your weapon.  Short barreled smoothbore models 18 to 22 inches in length are the preferred option)

Recommended Buckshot and Birdshot listed below.  (Make sure you factor in overpenetration possibilities and what is around your target and behind your target as both buckshot and birdshot can penetrate sheetrock walls)  Pellets or balls within the shotgun shell when fired, will expand rapidly with the distance traveled and will produce a shotguns pattern.

• 00 Buck 2 3/4″ OD green hull manufactured by Olin Winchester (Each pull of the trigger will put nine, 00 buck  33 caliber pellets into a target.  At close range can produce target penetration of up to 12 inches)
• #6 Bird 2 3/4 “  Black hull manufactured by Remington (Each pull of the trigger will put a significant quantity of small diameter pellets into a target.  At close range can produce target penetration of  up to 6 inches)

A choke is a screw in device which constricts the bore end of the barrel and its purpose is to decrease the spread of shot.  A choke will effect the tightness of the shot pattern.  Tighter patterns will contribute to better accuracy and wider patterns contribute to more area coverage. 

Defensive Shotgun Tips

• The shotgun for defensive purposes should be used only when you are in immediate fear for your life or the lives of your family.  It is not for bluffing.  If  and when you pull it out you need to have the mindset that you may need to use it to protect your life or your families life.
• Shotguns offer devestating close range stopping power.
• At typical home defense distances the shot pattern is going to be very tight so you must aim or you will miss.
• Racking a shotgun does not scare an intruder away.  Human predators frequently do not feel fear or compassion and racking will not stop an attacker.  Shotshells properly aimed and fired when your life is in danger will.
• The primary objective in home defense is to hit the criminal who is threatening your life without overpenetrating and hitting unintended victims.
• A weapon is not about bluffing; it’s about surviving.
• Make sure you have a workable understanding of weapons manipulation, sight picture, sight alignment and trigger control.

Rules of Firearms Safety

• Treat all guns as if they are loaded.
• Never let the muzzle cover anything or anyone you are not willing to destroy.
• Keep your fingers off the trigger until your sights are on the target.
• Be sure of your target and what is around it and beyond it.

Principles

• People of principle, you and I and other Americans who seek to defend themselves and not be victims are what keeps the thugs from winning.
• Everyone has the right and responsibility to protect their homes and families from criminal attack.

Picking A Proper Pistol For Self Defense

Picking a proper pistol for self defense can at times seem like an arduous decision.  Here are some important things to consider when selecting your self defense pistol.

• Look to what the military and law enforcement uses.
• Purchase from a reputable dealer.
• Stick with name brands that have a solid, proven performance track record.
• 38 special, 9mm, 40 S&W and 45ACP are good caliber choices.
• Handguns should not be selected based on fad or fashion.  They should be selected based on reliability, durability and ease of use.
• Determine how you plan on carrying or accessing your weapon and take into consideration size and weight of the weapon.
• Make sure you obtain proper training and have the proper permits for your jurisdiction.
• Do not cut corners on support gear.

Time To Talk 12 Gauge Pump Action Shotguns

The 12 gauge pump action shotgun is one of the most versatile home defense weapons ever made. At ranges of 25 yards or less using 00 buckshot; the ability to stop an attacker is significant. 12 gauge pump action shotguns are versitile, reliable, and robust; and can accomodate buckshot, birdshot, slugs, etc.  For self defense you should consider using buckshot; want to feed your family during a post apocalyptic period, consider switching to birdshot.  

Accessories are abundant and its always interesting to see the various configurations people come up with.  Remember mission dictates weapons selection and also dictates weapons modifications. For tactical/defensive applications an 18 to 20 inch barrel is ideal.  For food procurement or skeet shooting, a 28 inch barrel gets the job done.
