It’s your home; and that means you have a responsibility to protect your home and your family from criminals who want to do you harm.  Basic home defense precautions such as a large dog, locking your doors, windows, garages, etc., deadbolt locks and door jam bars are essential precautionary measures but once a criminal is inside you will need additional defensive capabilities.

Firearms are simply the best, modern home defense weapon for those who are properly trained or experienced in their use.  Your home defense weapon or weapons must be effective, reliable and capable of stopping a threat when your life or the lives of your family are in danger.

You also need to factor in overpenetration which means you will need to be aware of what is beyond your target, since sheetrock walls won’t stop bullets.  You do not want to injure family members around or behind a criminal when your life or your families lives are in imminent danger.

Some firearms considerations are as follows.  12 Gauge pump action shotguns as they have the most effective stopping power at close range and depending on the model can hold between 5 to 8 shells in the tube.  Semi Automatic handguns due to their small size, concealability and convenient accessibility and depending on the model can hold between 8 to 17 rounds in the magazine.

Generally I do not recommend rifles for home defense as the potential for overpenetration and the distances most calibers travel is just too risky in typical neighborhoods.  Even when using shotguns or semi automatic handguns be aware of any overpenetration which might result.

Whatever firearms you decide to use as your primary home defense weapons make sure you train with them often and become thoroughly familiar with their workings.  Your home defense firearms must be 100% reliable as your life may one day depend on them.  You have a right and a responsibility to protect your loved ones, make sure you are up to the task.

One of my readers asked me if I would address this topic so I’ll take a run at it as requested.  In order to be better prepared to protect yourself; be aware of the warning signs that usually signal that an attack by a criminal is imminent.

  • When someone invades your personal space, by standing too close, especially when there aren’t many people around.  What they are doing is closing the distance between you and themselves for a potential attack.
  • Asking you a question like do you have the time or do you have change for a dollar.  What they are doing is evaluating your situational awareness and sizing you up as a potential target.
  • If someone is walking towards you and their hands are hidden; especially behind their backs, your radar should be up telling you that something is wrong.
  • Coordinated motion; if you cross the street and they cross the street, if you stop walking and they stop walking; you are being positioned for an attack.
  • Glances are another tell-tale sign.  If someone is constantly glancing around to see if they are being watched it is a good indication that they are up to no good.  What they are doing is making sure there are no potential witnesses before they attack.
  • If someone directly in front of you starts shifting their weight look out for an attack.  Weight shifting is generally done so that they can deliver a maximum knockout punch before assaulting or robbing you.
  • Herding occurs when a criminal tries to manuever or lure you to an isolated place.  If you feel like you are being steered away from people to a dark or deserted area; do not go, period.
  • Never flash money or expensive jewelry in public.  You never know who might be watching and decide to make you a target.
  • Always be situationally aware.

Violent criminals seek out those who appear weak, defenseless, and who are not paying attention to what is going on around them.  In order to avoid violent attacks or to survive them if you are involved in one, the following things should be strongly considered.

  • Walk with confidence and project confidence.  Give the impression that you would be a hard target.
  • Avoid dangerous places and dangerous neighborhoods.
  • Be situationally aware of what is going on around you.
  • Where legal, carry a defensive weapon and be proficient in its use.
  • Keep your cell phone fully charged and available.
  • Don’t take needless risks such as jogging alone through the woods or walking through alleys as a shortcut to your destination.
  • Use your environment as a tool such as using store windows to see if you are being followed.  If you suspect danger get out of there and seek assistance immediately.
  • Don’t let politeness make you a target.  If someone encroaches on your territory or you get a bad vibe tell them to get back or back off.
  • Take responsibility for your own safety.
  • If you are attacked fight to win.  Know the strike points on the human body that will quickly incapacitate an attacker.

In order to avoid being carjacked, it is worthwhile to understand the methods that carjackers use.

  • Carjackers will bump your vehicle from behind and when you get out to exchange insurance information or inspect the damage they will steal your vehicle.
  • Carjackers will stage an accident with fake injuries and when you stop and get out to assist, your vehicle will be stolen.
  • Carjackers will follow you to your home or office and when you park they will pull up behind you so you can’t escape then steal your car and leave with both vehicles.
  • Carjackers will flash lights to get your attention then when you pull over your vehicle will be taken.
  • Carjackers will pose as police officers and when you pull over they will take your vehicle.

So how can you prepare yourself.  Try the following.  Stay away from dangerous areas. Be situationally aware of your surroundings, if something feels wrong then get out of there.  Keep your doors locked and your windows rolled up.  Maintain sufficient distance between vehicles so that you have an avenue of escape if a carjacking starts.  If you cannot see the rear tires of the vehicle in front of you then you are too close to that vehicle.  Your vehicle is thousands of pounds of raw power, use it effectively.  Make sure to keep a fully charged cellphone handy with your emergency phone numbers pre-stored.

Safety and security are important considerations when going about your day to day activities.  It begins with having a proper mindset and exhibiting confidence in your movements and actions.  You must maintain situational awareness which is knowing and anticipating what is going on around you.  If something feels wrong or dangerous then that is your bodies way of telling you to “watch out, there is danger here.”

Criminals look for people they perceive as being easy victims; so you must appear to be a hard target. Most criminals will avoid anyone they sense will put up a struggle or will fight back and cause them injury.  Here are some real world tips to help you stay safe and secure.

  • Avoid using out of the way ATM’s.
  • Stay away from poorly lit places.
  • Lock up your home properly.
  • Thoroughly scan parking lots before parking and keep your doors locked.
  • If someone is loitering consider them as up to no good and avoid them.
  • Do not take shortcuts between rows of parked cars and never walk next to a van.
  • Tunnels, alleys, bridges, and paths by rivers are all potential choke points which means only one way in and one way out, which makes it perfect for assailants to await ambush opportunities.
  • Don’t walk or jog through parks and wooded paths alone.
  • Stay out of known high crime areas.
