So you’ve survived a disaster and now you find yourself trying to stay alive in a hostile world filled with thugs, criminals, looters and raiders.  They are everywhere; so to increase your survival chances you must minimize any target indicators that you give off.

A target indicator is anything that will reveal your location to an enemy.  As you move throughout the post apocalyptic world avoid giving off the following target indicators.

  • Avoid walking on creaky wooden floors or stepping on twigs or branches.
  • Avoid your reflection showing in windows, mirrors and other shiny surfaces.
  • Avoid giving off shadows.
  • Avoid having your gun muzzle protrude from around a corner.
  • Avoid the sounds of your clothing scraping against a wall.
  • Avoid leaving a previously closed door open after you have entered a location and vice versa.
  • Avoid leaving the smell of tobacco in a location where that smell was not present before.
  • Avoid colognes and scented soaps as these smells can be easy to track.
  • Avoid leaving footprints especially muddy footprints.
  • Avoid leaving palm prints on foggy windows.
  • Avoid talking when not necessary as sounds can travel a good distance.
  • Avoid wearing gear and other equipment which rattles.
  • Avoid quick and jerky movements.
  • Avoid creating strong cooking odors.

By request I was asked by a reader to re-address this topic.  In order to avoid being carjacked, it is worthwhile to understand the methods that carjackers use.

  • Carjackers will bump your vehicle from behind and when you get out to exchange insurance information or inspect the damage they will steal your vehicle.
  • Carjackers will stage an accident with fake injuries and when you stop and get out to assist, your vehicle will be stolen.
  • Carjackers will follow you to your home or office and when you park they will pull up behind you so you can’t escape then steal your car and leave with both vehicles.
  • Carjackers will flash lights to get your attention then when you pull over your vehicle will be taken.
  • Carjackers will pose as police officers and when you pull over they will then take your vehicle.

So how can you prepare yourself.  Try the following.  Stay away from dangerous areas. Be situationally aware of your surroundings, if something feels wrong then get out of there.  Keep your doors locked and your windows rolled up.  Maintain sufficient distance between vehicles so that you have an avenue of escape if a carjacking starts.  If you cannot see the rear tires of the vehicle in front of you then you are too close to that vehicle.  Your vehicle is thousands of pounds of raw power, use it effectively.  Make sure to keep a fully charged cellphone number handy with your emergency phone numbers pre-stored.

What is one of the most dangerous scenarios that can occur in a SHTF situation?  The answer is other people.  Anytime other people are cold, wet, hungry, scared, in panic mode and unprepared to the point that it is a life or death situation for them; the thin veneer of civilization will fade away and they will resort to their base animal instincts to try and take what you have by any means necessary; without regard to your safety or your life.

Having a SHTF supply of food, water, medicine, clothing, fuel, etc., is not enough.  You must have the means, determination, weapons, ammo, training and skills to keep what you have set aside for your families survival from those who did not prepare and will try and take your supplies.  Need proof, just look at what happened during the LA riots or Hurricane Katrina.  Need I say more!

Be alert for predatory signs that usually signal an increased probability of attack.  These signs include excessive or prolonged eye contact; people who approach you deliberately or move with you as you move; predatory movements such as circling, splitting up, or trying to get behind you and people who try and herd you towards a low visibility, isolated ambush point.

Other signs include the use of distractions such as someone asking for directions, or for a light, or physically bumping into you; people who quickly enter your personal space; people who are deliberately following you and people who wear inappropriate clothes such as a heavy jacket in warm weather.

Pay attention to your surroundings (situational awareness).  If something seems unusual, start to increase your defensive posture.  Your behaviors and actions should signal to a predator that you would be a hard target and that you pose such a hazard to them, that they will look elsewhere for an easier target.

Avoid dangerous people and dangerous situations.  If attacked you must be mentally prepared to incapacitate your attacker and win at all costs.  Your mindset and attitude can significantly effect the outcome.
