You have a right and a responsibility to provide adequately for your own self defense and the self defense of your loved ones. Police tend to be a reactive institution rather than a proactive institution when it comes to violent crime; meaning that they show up when called after a violent crime has been committed, not before.  Therefore the prudent individual will take the steps necessary to make sure if a violent encounter heads their way, they are prepared to stop it and survive.

Do not go looking for trouble, but if trouble finds you then having good fighting skills, knowing strike points on the human body that will incapacitate an attacker, being proficient with edged weapons, knowing how to handle handguns, rifles, and shotguns will all be valuable skills if your life is on the line.

Violent criminals do not share the same moral values that we do.  To them you are their meal ticket.  They see you as nothing more than an obstacle to obtaining what they want.  Reasoning and pleading will fall on deaf ears.  What they understand is brute force resistance.  Make yourself a hard target so it is not worth their effort to select you as their next victim.

As preppers; we live by the simple mantra of being prepared.  Since disasters and emergencies can come in a variety of shapes and sizes it is important to have other members of your immediate family participate in the various facets of disaster preparedness.  It is a good idea to go over the disasters that could most likely affect you and your family and make sure everyone has assigned tasks that they carry out should a disaster scenario occur.  It could be monitoring emergency frequencies, or dispensing food and water rations, or patrolling assigned areas to guard against thugs and looters, etc.,

Everyone should know the tasks they are expected to perform as well as where primary and secondary meeting places will be in case everyone is not in the same location when a disaster scenario occurs.  I won’t dwell too much on bug out bags here; except to say that everyone should have one and the contents should be reviewed and if needed, updated, at least once per month.  Finally make sure you set a good example for others to follow.  During times of crisis people will be looking to you for effective leadership.  Don’t disappoint them.

Time and time again we witness natural disasters such as Hurricane Katrina where people are either unable or unwilling to take care of themselves.  Being self reliant and self sufficient is essential during a disaster scenario as potential help may be either unable or unwilling to assist.  Do not rely on others for your own life saving disaster strategies.  It’s nice to think that help will always be available but for practical purposes; that may not be the case.

Survival and preparedness skills for any situation are important and essential for everyone to learn. You must be ready, willing, and able to do what is necessary to survive when a disaster scenario strikes.  Pay attention to warning signs and to your own gut feelings and observations.  If something seems wrong or dangerous then there is a good chance that it is wrong or dangerous.  The right tools, the right skills, and the right weapons for defensive purposes along with the right mental outlook can make all the difference between surviving or not surviving.  Personally given the choice I choose survival.

Here are some important considerations to think about if and when a disaster scenario occurs.  Being aware of them and having a workable plan could prove life saving if you find yourself in a disaster or post apocalypse situation.  After all it’s only a matter of time before you may have to deal with the following realities.

  • Neighbors in many places are not as willing to help out as they once were since both the moral and religous fiber of our society has crumbled away.
  • Pre-collapse civil disorder has already begun in places and stringent gun control laws in effect in certain locales makes defending yourself and your family that much harder.
  • If widespread disasters occur; expect that law enforcement will abandon their posts if it comes down to a choice of protecting society or protecting their own families.  Cops are only human and like the rest of us; family comes first.  (Remember Hurricane Katrina).
  • Looting, rioting and criminal behavior will be rampant and those who are well armed and well trained will have a better chance of not being victimized then those who are unarmed and poorly trained.
  • Disasters may force people to be self sufficient and self reliant for extended periods of time.  Are you adequately prepared for this?  Do you have the skills and gear required to survive?  If not you need to develop those skills and get that gear now.
  • Food, water, shelter, medical supplies, guns, ammo and related items will be survival essentials that you should have sufficient quantities of before disaster strikes.  Trying to get them afterwards will be extremely difficult if not almost impossible.
  • Trust needs to be earned.  Actions speak louder than words.   You are ultimately responsible for your own survival.

Survival and preparedness are important concepts to master.  The following are some often overlooked survival tips which should be considered.

  • Get in the habit of carrying essentail every day carry gear on you.  It may be all you have if you are away from home and a disaster strikes.  Some considerations to keep with you are your handgun, spare ammo, car keys, folding knife, flashlight and identification.
  • Always stay properly hydrated.
  • Eye protection is a must either by using prescription or non prescription glasses.  If your vision is damaged and you can’t see your chances of survival are greatly diminished.
  • Communications are essential.  Keep in mind that a text takes up less bandwidth then a cell phone call; so if a cell phone call won’t go through due to an overload of the system during a disaster, a text still might.
  • Considerations for emergency shelter should factor in abandoned houses, garages and factories.  There are lots of abandoned buildings which could be used as emergency shelter if needed.  Stay concealad and watch your intended shelter location carefully to ensure it’s abandoned before approaching.
  • Some suburban needs may be different than urban needs when it comes to survival and preparedness and vice versa.
  • Avoid checkpoints as any gear you have may be confiscated.
  • Maintain a positive, confident attitude.  Fear and self doubt will reduce your chances of survival.

If an emergency or disaster strikes are you prepared?  This is a question you need to ask yourself honestly when it comes to survival and preparedness.  If you have the skills, the gear, the knowledge and the ability to adapt to changing circumstances your chances for survival increase dramatically.

Hurricanes, Tornados, Power Outages, Floods, Civil Unrest, Societal Breakdown, etc., are all things which could happen to anyone, anywhere.  Therefore it is imperative to be prepared with adequate emergency shelter, food, water, first aid items, self defense strategies and the right attitude and mindset which allows you to persevere, overcome and survive.

Bad times can often bring out the worst in people so having the ability to properly defend yourself and weather out any potential disaster scenarios takes on vital importance.  Review your survival plans frequently and make changes as needed.  Study and implement the best methods to prepare for disasters and above all do what is necessary to stay safe.

When it comes to preparing for whatever disasters you anticipate might head your way; everyone needs to have a good survival plan.  The following is my plan.

  • Assess the threat and respond accordingly.
  • Maintain and review inventory of prepped supplies and keep sufficient quantities on hand.
  • Keep small amounts of bills and coins set aside, as funds through ATM’s, etc., may not be available if the power is out.
  • Food and water are top priorities so make sure there is plenty available.  A 3 months supply per person including for your pets is a good goal to strive for.
  • Guns and sufficient ammo are essential for self defense as well as having proper training in their defensive applications.
  • Proper clothing and available medicines should be ready and waiting.
  • Your reliable vehicles should all have full gas tanks and there should be a sufficient quantity of spare 5 gallon gas cans filled and ready for use.
  • Make sure there is sufficient wood and duraflame logs for the fireplace or woodstove.
  • Make sure there is sufficient charcoal available for the grill.
  • Keep communications gear fully charged and ready to go.
  • Have a sufficient supply of plywood and screws in case anything needs to be boarded up.
  • Stay positive and be prepared to adapt as needed.
  • Do not overlook personal security.
  • Have a working generator available with appropriate power cords and fuel.
  • Remember accurate information is critical.

During times of disaster people will become desperate and will resort to acts of violence and desperation.  An outlaw mentality will develop as some people begin to feel that society is to blame and that they are entitled to things which they are not entitled to.

If commerce becomes disrupted you must rely on your own logistics.  Your goal is to survive a disaster in a better position than those who have not taken the time or effort to prepare themselves.  Make sure you know your limitations.  You must know what you are capable of and under what conditions you are capable of performing these tasks in.

In any defensive scenario; it is important to be aware of all that is around you as part of your 360 degree security plan.  You need to pay particular attention to anyone or anything which seems out of place.  Trust your instincts, do not ignore them as your first concern will be to stay alive.

You are your own first line of self defense.  Based on circumstances the course of action you choose needs to be carried through without hesitation.  When faced with violence, which cannot be avoided, you must have the will to act with ferocity and severity in order to save your life.

It is irrational in this day and age that a law abiding citizen would not carry some form of a weapon.  To choose not to carry a weapon intentionally renders yourself partially defenseless.  Violence is escalating and many attacks occur in fringe areas such as deserted parking lots, alleyways, public bathrooms, stairwells, ATM kiosks, etc., where no immediate help will be available.

The most reliable and powerful weapon will do you no good if a situation demands immediate, decisive action for your survival and you fail to take action.  While it is best to avoid violence; if you are in a life threatening situation you may need to react violently to save your life.  Never escalate a situation which could turn violent until you consider where it might lead.

Many times  disasters occur without warning.  It could be anything from hurricanes, to extended power outages, to violent crime, to societal breakdown, etc.  It is always best to prepare in advance for potential situations which could occur, rather than be caught unprepared if and when they do occur.

Here are some things I consider important enough to prepare right now.

  • Stock up on non perishable food and water now.  At least 3 months worth per person.  This also includes a 3 months supply of food and water for each of your pets.  A cool, dry basement is a great place to set up shelving units to hold these supplies.
  • Batteries; yes you will absolutely need them for everything from flashlights to radios.  Stock up on as many as you can.  I keep mine in ziploc bags which are then placed in lots of empty coffee cans by battery size.  Keep your rechargeable and disposable batteries in seperate areas.
  • Maintain your perimeter security by keeping doors, windows and garages locked, walk your property daily to make sure it is secure and use wireless motion detector alert systems.  Big dogs work well also.  Mine is an Alaskan Malamute.
  • Keep your communications gear fully charged including cell phones and 2 way radios.
  • Obtain proper training and get your pistol permit.  Also obtain proper training in the use of shotguns and rifles as well.  Have your firearms ready with sufficient ammunition available and train on a regular basis with each of your firearms.  There is no such thing as having too much properly stored ammunition.
  • Have a sharp knife, as well as reliable hand tools available.  Also have a sufficient quantity of spare plywood and nails and screws.
  • An 8,000 to 10,000 watt generator is a must, along with a power cord to attach it to your previously installed whole house power outlet and a sufficient supply of safely stored, stabilized gasoline to run the generator. About 20, red 5 gallon each gasoline cans should do it.  20×5 = 100 gallons.
  • Keep well supplied first aid kits available and know how to properly use them.
  • Have a written survival plan and familiarize yourself with it.
  • Did I mention firearms 🙂  Own them, train with them, and become proficient in their use; as applies to a variety of possible defensive scenarios.

What is a prepper?  An interesting question and I propose the following answer. A prepper is a person who seeks to be prepared for things that life might throw your way.  A person who is self reliant when it comes to survival, preparedness and protection.  A person who understands the fragility of society and who uses effective reasoning and decision making skills to make sure that they thrive and survive.  A person who is respectful of other people and their property and expects the same considerations in return.   So are you a prepper?
