I haven’t met a prepper yet who doesn’t really enjoy beef jerky.  Here’s a good method for making this delicious and nutritious treat.

  • Trim excess fat from the meat.
  • Place the meat in a freezer bag and put it in the freezer for about 30 minutes.
  • Mix up your marinade in a bowl while the meat is in the freezer.
  • Remove the meat from the freezer.  It should be firm but not frozen solid.
  • Cut the meat into thin strips.
  • Place the meat strips in a clean, 1 gallon zip-lock freezer bag.
  • Pour your marinade into the bag with the meat, covering the meat entirely.
  • Squeeze as much air as you can out of the bag and then seal the bag.
  • Place the freezer bag in the refrigerator overnight and let the meat soak in the marinade.
  • Knead the bag occasionally to make sure the coating is reasonably even.
  • Remove the marinated bag from the refrigerator, the next day, and dump the contents into a colander to drain.
  • Choose your drying method such as using the oven or a dehydrator.
  • If using the oven place your meat in the pre-heated oven for 4 to 5 hours leaving the oven door slightly ajar.  200 degrees is a good temperature to use.
  • Let it cool down once the drying is complete.  Enjoy your beef jerky.

When it comes to your survival food storage pantry I wanted to add a few points to help others with their survival food preparation plans.

  • Canned foods are ideal as they are inexpensive, compact, durable and have long shelf lives.  Canned goods should be stored in cool, dry places either stacked on sturdy shelves or placed in large plastic totes with snap down covers.
  • When opening a sealed can or jar for the first time; the interior should be vacuum sealed and should make a small sucking sound when the seal is broken.  This should tell you that the food is good.
  • Be wary of cans that are dented around the crimp seal rims.  Never eat food from a can or a jar that exhibits signs of internal pressure. Jars should be concave (sucked inwards at the center) and never popped upwards.  Metal cans should never be bloated with walls or ends bulging outwards.  These are indicators that the food has spoiled.

As preppers we all know the importance of having a safely stocked emergency supply of food, water, first aid items, self defense equipment, and the list of course goes on and on.  When it comes to food; while it is important to have a healthy variety to choose from, as well as making sure it has long term shelf life capability, I notice that every prepper seems to have one particular food item that they stock up on more than the others.

As you review your food storage items; sometimes this item becomes clearly evident upon visual inspection. Simply by counting the amount of items stocked; the overall winner in my survival pantry is of all things Spaghettios.  Yes I know there are healthier choices; but I find nothing gets me quite as warmed up and ready to roll quickly like a fast, hot can of Spaghettios.

Check your foods as you may find one food item that has a sneaky way of being there more often than any other food choices you have been stockpiling; in case disaster strikes.  So what item is in your survival food pantry that has become your favorite in both abundance and taste?

Life is meant to be lived and enjoyed to the fullest.  You should live the way you want, work at something you enjoy doing, reside where you want and get as much satisfaction from life as possible.  Along with that however, it is also prudent to be prepared for situations in life where things are contra to your best interests.  Disasters such as social unrest, war, famine, societal collapse, escalations in violent crime, etc., are just some of the things that in this day and age are of concern to many.  So, along with enjoying the good times, it is also important to prepare for the bad times.

The following are the things I consider most important for preparing for your own survival.

  • There is no such thing as having too much canned food or water set aside.  If disaster strikes, grocery stores may not be available to supplement your needs.  You must maintain a minimum of 3 months worth of food and water per person.
  • Yes, yes, yes you must have a sufficient amount of guns and ammunition and be well versed in their use.  You may have sufficient quantities of emergency supplies, but if others try and forcibly take them, you must be able to hold onto what you have.
  • People can and will panic during disasters so avoid large crowds and any areas subject to martial law and or rioting.  Use common sense and good judgement in deciding whom to trust.
  • Always keep  small amounts of cash on hand.  A disaster may render ATM’s and credit card systems useless.  If so, cash or barter may be the only ways to immediately conduct business.
  • Take responsibility for your own survival.  Ability without character is useless.  Remain moral and ethical during times of crisis.
  • As I constantly remind readers; stay situationally aware.  You must know what is going on around you so that dangerous people and situations cannot catch you off guard.

When a SHTF scenario occurs; it is of paramount importance that you have planned accordingly, beforehand, how to deal with the circumstances that such an event will trigger.  The following are some things that you need to consider before a SHTF scenario occurs.

  • There will not be enough resources or emergency personnel to look after everyone.  You will be responsible for your own survival so do not expect rescue.  It will be an added bonus if rescue occurs but do not count on it.
  • Have a safe, secure, defendable location available to you.
  • Keep a low profile.  Avoid main roads if you must travel.
  • Authority figures are not to be trusted.  In a panic scenario society’s rules are quickly forgotten and some of those who would normally protect you, in a civilized time and place, can no longer be relied upon to do so.  Some military and police may devolve into rogue units so it is best to avoid them.
  • Avoid survivor camps at all costs.  Once inside you will likely not be permitted to leave; and any weapons, food or supplies you have with you will be confiscated.
  • Expect martial law to be declared and expect that attempts will be made to confiscate any supplies you have set aside for your survival.  Keep a low profile when it comes to your state of preparedness.
  • Crime will escalate to extremely high levels.  Be prepared to deal with it in an effective manner.
  • The preps you have may be all that is available for some time; so food, water, medicine, guns, ammo, cash on hand, etc., that you have stocked; will be all you might have immediate access to.

If the SHTF and food and water become hard for people to locate, expect government officials, police and fire departments to consider you a hoarder if they find out you have bulk stocked up on food and water.  Keep these preparations to yourself; as being prepared to them will be nothing more than an opportunity to these officials to seize your items and redistribute them to the masses.  Why should a 3 month supply of food and water needed for your family be taken and given to others who were not properly prepared!  Use stealth when stocking up on your survival supplies.

You cannot survive without sufficient clean drinking water, sufficient food, followed by sufficient shelter and a sufficient means of self defense.  These four things are absolutely, positively essential to your survival when disaster strikes.  Without these basic essentials you will not survive; so it is worth repeating……. You must have sufficient clean drinking water, sufficient food, followed by sufficient shelter and a sufficient means of self defense.  Start preparing today!
