So you have your pistol permit and are considering purchasing a handgun.  Here are some important items to consider.  Remember to always verify that any firearm is unloaded before handling.

  • Make sure the handgun is in a sufficient caliber to be able to use for self defense purposes and is not too much caliber for you to comfortably handle.
  • Make sure the firearm holds a sufficient quantity of ammunition for your needs.
  • Grip the pistol firmly and make sure you can achieve a good and proper firing grip.
  • With the firearm verified as unloaded, squeeze the trigger and make sure it is not too heavy.  You should be able to pull the trigger straight back without any deviation.
  • Make sure the front and rear sights are in proper alignment and will achieve quick target acquisition.
  • Make sure the pistol has a good history of reliability and accuracy.
  • Don’t be swayed by salesmen who are trying to push a particular make or model.  Do your research beforehand and purchase what works best for you.
  • Make sure you receive proper instruction and train on a regular basis with your firearm.

So you’ve gone out and purchased the perfect leather handgun holster; only problem is it’s too snug and it is affecting your ability to smoothly and reliably draw your handgun.  The solution, stretching the leather holster to accomodate your weapon.  Here is the method I use.

  1. Begin by making sure the leather holster you purchase is designed for your model of handgun.  If it is, stretching it with the following method should maintain retention but allow for a smooth, quick draw of the handgun from the leather holster.
  2. Start by tightly pushing a hand towel into the leather holster to a width slightly larger than your handgun.  Work it around the inside of your leather holster.
  3. Leave the hand towel inside the leather holster overnight.
  4. The next day remove the hand towel from the leather holster.  The leather holster should now be stretched sufficiently to accomadate your handgun properly.

Whenever I take my handguns and shotguns to the range for practice; my range bag comes along as an essential piece of shooting gear.  Its purpose; to keep all my gear safely stored and together in one convenient, organized gear bag.  I’ve used a lot of range bags over the years but the one I find works best for my needs is the 511 Tactical Patrol Ready Bag.  It has convenient storage pockets for almost anything you need to bring with you and is sized properly to store whatever you need to ensure a proper and enjoyable range session.

Here’s what I keep in the various internal and external pockets.  Two water bottles, 9mm ammo in a molle pouch, 45ACP ammo in a separate molle pouch, pistol rugs, holsters, spare magazines, ear protection, gun cleaning equipment, first aid kit, targets, tape, 00 buck shotgun shells in molle pouches, shooting gloves, flashlight, spare batteries, fixed blade knife, bandanna, ball cap and a few other miscellaneous odds and ends.

Don’t let the lame stream media; who couldn’t report a story fairly if they tried, and yes I mean MSNBC in particular; make you think that you have no options when it comes to the right to keep and bear arms.  Apparently that network; as well as many liberals in general, have no idea what real freedom is and what the 2nd amendment stands for.  These liberal politicians go so far as to take an oath to support and uphold the Constitution; then do everything they can to do the exact opposite.

If a criminal breaks into your home with the intent of harming you or your family; you must have the means to defend yourself and that is where firearms and proper training come in.  Criminals are not breaking into your home hoping you’ll ask them to sit down and share a cup of coffee; they are there to rob, rape or kill you and you’d better be able to defend yourself and your loved ones.  After all; my life and my family’s lives are more important than some scumbag criminals.

Today I say piss off an anti gun liberal by doing the following.

  • Get your pistol permit
  • Legally purchase your handguns, shotguns, rifles, ammo and support gear; that will be the most beneficial for the self defense of yourself and your family.
  • Train at your local gun club or rifle range on a regular basis.
  • Support the 2nd amendment and support others who support the 2nd amendment.
  • Call those uninformed, misguided, freedom hating  liberals out; when they try to impose ridiculous gun control legislation.

Please reblog this post wherever possible as it is so important to make sure our rights to keep and bear arms are fully protected.

The debate over which is better; the 9mm or the 45ACP is like debating which is better; McDonalds vs Burger King or Pizza Hut vs Dominoes.  There are advantages to each when it comes to a life and death defensive scenario and in the long run only you can decide which is best for you.  Neither round can guarantee a one shot stop scenario or effect how you will react under that type of stress; but the following are some considerations when it comes to caliber.

  1. The 45ACP is a larger round and will produce a larger wound; and more tissue damage than a 9mm at the same distances.
  2. The 45ACP has better penetrating capabilities than the 9mm.
  3. The 9mm handgun magazine will hold more rounds than a similar sized 45 magazine.
  4. 9mm pistols are generally easier to conceal than 45’s.
  5. Recoil is less with a 9mm round than with a 45.
  6. The 9mm is the most widely used of all pistol rounds.

All things considered; both rounds work well for defensive handgun scenarios and it all comes down to personal preference.  Go with the 45ACP if you prefer more stopping power with smaller magazine capacity or go with the 9mm if you prefer slightly less stopping power with a larger magazine capacity.

As examples; My 45 caliber handguns full size generally will hold 10+1 rounds.  My 9mm handguns full size generally hold 17+1 rounds.  My compact size 9mm handguns for concealed carry generally hold 12+1 rounds.

With the myriad of handgun choices available today; here are my reasons for preferring the Smith & Wesson M&P 45 to all others.

  • The weapon is accurate, well balanced and I have yet to experience a malfunction during many sessions of range time use.
  • The weapon is comfortable to grip and reasonably lightweight as the frame is made from a Zytel polymer with Stainless Steel structural components.
  • Barrel and slide are made of Stainless Steel with a Black Melonite coating.
  • Length is 7 3/4″ and when empty weighs 1 pound 13.3 ounces.
  • Magazine capacity is 10 + 1 rounds of 45 ACP ammo.
  • Weapon comes with a lifetime service policy.
  • Weapon is designed for the needs of military, law enforcement and civilians.
  • Manual safety is easy to reach and sights are easy to use for quick target acquisition.
  • It is similar in form and function to my other; smaller concealed carry weapon the Smith & Wesson M&P 9C which is functionally the same as the M&P 45 meaning that transition between weapons is smooth and easy.
  • Recoil is minimal for a weapon shooting a 45ACP round.
  • Accessory rail is standard for those who choose to add accessories such as a light.
  • Weapon comes with 3 interchangeable grips depending on the size of your hand.
  • Many different holstering options are available for this specific handgun.

Another tragic shooting occurred, this time in my home state of Connecticut.  With that said my prayers go out to the families and friends of the victims but the most effective way to stop these tragic events from happening is not to ban guns for the millions of law abiding citizens such as myself who use firearms and have permits to carry them; but instead to do the following.

  • Cultivate a society where more properly trained, law abiding civilians carry weapons.  We are the front lines for intervening in these types of incidents if we happen to be in the same location where a nut job tries to do a Newtown or a Columbine or an Aurora.  The laws on this need to protect us fully if we have an option to stop a shooter; and save lives and exercise that option.
  • Stop designating gun free zones such as at the school in Newtown.  All a gun free designation does is tell criminals that there is no armed presence there to stop them; which only encourages them in their criminal ways even more.
  • Stop trying to ban the gun rights of law abiding citizens.  Gun control only takes away weapons from law abiding citizens; as criminals obtain their weapons illegally on the black market.

I for one am a proud gun owner who has carried concealed, legally, for most of my adult life and will continue to do so.

If you are considering carrying a concealed handgun the following factors need to be reviewed.

  • Make sure you have the proper permit to do so.  If not, obtain one.
  • Seek proper training and go to your local range and practice, practice, practice.
  • Ask yourself if you are willing to use deadly force to protect your life and your families lives when no other recourse is available.
  • Make sure you properly understand the laws relating to the use of deadly force for your state and country.
  • Are you willing to adapt your style and manner of attire to properly conceal a weapon?  After all concealed means concealed.
  • Have you selected and trained with the best handgun and caliber for your personal, defensive situation?
  • Is your personality and temperment suitable for carrying a concealed weapon?

A concealed firearm when properly carried and with proper training and the proper mindset can provide peace of mind and can be a life saver if it is ever needed in that capacity.

If you are currently going through the stages where you’re internally debating with yourself whether or not to carry a firearm, think about the following.  How would it make you feel if a criminal had total control; the power of life and death over you and your family with only the criminal having any say in whether you or your family lived or died.   Without having a firearm and a working knowledge of using that firearm to defend yourself and your family you would have absolutely no input into that scenario.  It is your right and your responsibility to protect yourself and your family.  Never forget that.  So get that permit, get some training and practice those skills.

Why is shooting center mass and or head shots so important?  In essence because it is combat effective. It stops assailants who are trying to harm you and your family, during a home invasion as an example, when the threat of death to you and yours is immediate and apparent.  Head shots are an expedient way to end an attack as hitting the brain turns off the attackers ability to control his central nervous system.  Head shots are generally more difficult then center mass shots as the head is a smaller target and tends to move around more than the torso area.

Center mass is essentially shots to the torso with the preferred location being high on the chest.  These are easier shots to make than head shots as even if your aim is slightly off, you still have a good chance of hitting a vital organ and bringing the attack to an end.  If your life or your families lives are in imminent danger, the primary focus is to stop the attack with a justifiable use of lethal force.  After all your life is more important than some scumbags who is out there to rape or murder you with no regard for your life or the lives or your loved ones.
