In any scenario; it is important to be aware of all that is around you as part of your 360 degree security plan.  You need to pay particular attention to anyone or anything which seems out of place.  Trust your instincts, do not ignore them as your first concern will be to stay alive.

You are your own first line of self defense.  Based on circumstances the course of action you choose needs to be carried through without hesitation.  When faced with violence, which cannot be avoided, you must have the will to act with ferocity and severity in order to save your life.

It is irrational in this day and age that a law abiding citizen would not carry some form of a weapon.  To choose not to carry a weapon intentionally renders yourself partially defenseless.  Violence is escalating and many attacks occur in fringe areas such as deserted parking lots, alleyways, public bathrooms, stairwells, ATM kiosks, etc., where no immediate help will be available.

The most reliable and powerful weapon will do you no good if a situation demands immediate, decisive action for your survival and you fail to take action.  While it is best to avoid violence; if you are in a life threatening situation you may need to react violently to save your life.  Never escalate a situation which could turn violent until you consider where it might lead.

Knowing the difference between cover and concealment when under attack is of vital importance.  Cover is anything that provides varying degrees of protection from gunfire.  Examples are brick walls, concrete walls, engine compartments of vehicles, logs, thick tree trunks, trenches, rock formations, a freezer full of frozen food items, hillsides, metal dumpsters, sandbags at least 12 inches thick, 55 gallon drums filled with sand, steel doors, concrete parking barriers and telephone poles as examples.  If it can generally stop a bullet it is considered cover.

Concealment provides a place to hide but will not stop gunfire.  Examples are walls of a normal wood frame house, small trees, foliage, darkness, bushes, tall grass, shadows, car bodies, behind non steel doors, tables and couches.  If it cannot stop a bullet it is considered concealment.  Make sure you know the difference; it just might save your life someday.

It’s also important to know the penetrating depths of various calibers at various distances.  Things that might provide protection against a 22LR, 9mm, 45ACP, .223, 5.56 NATO, or a 7.62×39 may provide less protection or at times no protection against a .308, 30-06, 7mm Rem Magnum, 338, 300 Winchester, or 7.62x54r for example.  And if it’s a 50BMG; well pretty much nothing is going to stop that round.   Know your weapons, know your rounds, know the penetration depths at key distances and your odds of survival increase dramatically if the SHTF.

If you are going through the stages where you’re internally debating with yourself whether or not to carry a firearm, think about the following.

How would it make you feel if a criminal had total control; the power of life and death over you and your family with only the criminal having any say in whether you or your family lived or died.   Without having a firearm and a working knowledge of using that firearm to defend yourself and your family you would have absolutely no input into that scenario.  It is your right and your responsibility to protect yourself and your family.  Never forget that.

In the wake of a disaster or after a SHTF situation occurs you can expect the level of violent crime to increase.  Rape, murder, kidnapping, burglary, arson, etc., will be the new societal norm for the criminal element.  You will need to be armed.  Not following this basic premise will almost guarantee that you will become a victim of a violent crime and possibly killed at some point.

Insanity will reign in the inner cities and this violence will spread to the suburbs.  Law enforcement will not be sufficiently available to contain the violence so you must have the ability to defend yourself.  For your own personal security firearms become an essential component of your overall defensive plan.

If you expect bad economic times, social unrest, escalation of criminal activities, etc., you should stock up on defensive firearms, plenty of quality ammunition and spare magazines as required.  Remember any type of socio-political and economic instability triggers psychological instabilities and contributes significantly to the rise in brutal, violent crimes.  You do not want to become a refugee, forced from your home and you certainly do not want to become a victim of a violent crime.

Do not become a target for those who can do you harm; be inconspicuous in your activities and stay out of sight;  don’t attract unwanted attention; don’t become a refugee and never give up your ability or desire to resist and survive.  Become proficient with your firearms of choice as the safety of you and your family from violent criminal predators may just depend on it.

After a SHTF situation occurs; violent crime levels will increase.  Theft, burglary, kidnapping, arson, rape and murder will be the new norm.  You will need to be armed and have the proper skills to defend yourself with your weapons of choice. Insanity will reign in the inner cities and will spread out to the suburbs and then the rural areas. Not enough law enforcement will be available to contain the violent inner city residents so you must become your own first line of self defense.

If you expect massive civil unrest, economic hardships, political instability, etc., you must have the necessary means, via  weapons and proper weapons training to defend yourself from violent attacks.  Socio-political and economic instability can trigger psychological instability in people which will lead to a rise in violent crimes. Don’t become an easy target for those who can do you harm.  Don’t become a refugee and never ever give up your ability or desire to resist against a violent aggressor.

With so many different home defense firearms choices; I’d be interested in knowing what specific firearm my readers are using for home defense purposes and why that particular firearm was selected.  I ask because I keep going back and forth between a Mossberg 590A1 shotgun for home defense, a S&W M&P45 semi auto handgun for home defense, or a Taurus Tracker 357 Magnum revolver for home defense.  It seems that on a fairly regular basis I’m routinely swapping out my primary home defense weapons thinking that I can gain that much more of an advantage in defensive capabilities by doing so.  With that said I’d like to see what others are doing in this regard.
