Danger quite possibly can lurk around every corner and in order to survive when the odds seem against you; you must be real world tough.  What I’m saying is when obstacles get in your way do not let them stop you from achieving your objective.  This applies as much to everyday life as it does to any survival situation you might encounter.  Remember the following.

  • Stay vigilant and alert at all times.
  • Be confident and positive in your plans and actions.
  • Create your own opportunities.
  • Ignore people who belittle you or try and crush your dreams.
  • Stay focused on your objective and never quit.
  • You can achieve your goals if you have a plan and you tell yourself that you will succeed.
  • Success depends on one major variable; whether you believe enough in yourself to make the changes you need to happen, actually happen.
  • Do not rely on others for your own happiness.
  • Believe in yourself and have faith in your abilities.

In life, school, work, relationships or disaster survival your mental outlook can make all the difference between success and failure.  Remember that the next time a tough situation arises.  Being real world tough is much easier than it looks if you apply yourself accordingly.

In order to survive the zombie apocalypse, there are some key components that must be considered.

  • You must have the right gear and equipment.
  • You must have the proper skills and training.
  • You must have stamina and ingenuity.
  • You must have confidence and a positive mindset.
  • You must avoid having a defeatist, victim’s mentality.
  • You must use good judgement and be resourceful.
  • You must be flexibile enough to adapt to changing circumstances.
  • You must realistically know your strengths and weaknesses.
  • You must have a workable survival plan.
  • Water, food, shelter, medicine, firearms, ammunition and sharp knives and related weapons are must have items.
  • You must be situationally aware at all times.
  • You must be careful whom you trust, what you do, and where you go.

Come to think of it all of these things could also be considered keys to survivng everyday life.

I am a law abiding, pistol permit holder and like millions of others we have never shot anyone and we use our guns for recreational purposes and for personal and home defense.  Gun control does nothing to reduce crime; it simply disarms law abiding citizens who purchase their guns legally, but does nothing to disarm criminals who purchase their guns illegally on the black market.

The second amendment guarantees the citizens of the United States the right to keep and bear arms.  Ever notice that no one ever shoots up a pistol range or a gun club; why?  Because being armed in a location where everybody is lawfully armed keeps criminals away.  Only in gun free zones do criminals feel empowered to lash out; as they know they can expect no armed resistance from their victims.  An armed society is a polite society and is also a society that can effectively defend their own lives,  their families lives and their fellow citizens lives.

Gun control for law abiding citizens is pure nonsense; as only law abiding citizens would be affected.  Criminals don’t obey laws which is why they are criminals.  Don’t worry all you gun control advocates; if you are ever in danger from a thug or criminal who is intent on harming you or your family I will make sure not to assist with my firearm.  After all you really don’t want law abiding citizens who could have helped you to be armed and to save your life or families lives anyway now do you?

The following are some tips to keep you safe when traveling or living in the city.

  • Maintain situational awareness at all times.  Know who is around you and what they are doing.
  • Trust your gut instincts.  If something feels wrong; most likely it is wrong.
  • Never open the door to strangers.
  • Keep doors, windows and garages securely locked.
  • Big barking dogs are good deterrents against thieves and muggers.
  • Keep your wallet in your front pocket or inside your jacket.
  • Never walk by yourself at night and stay away from bad neighborhoods and high crime areas.
  • Have a fully charged cell phone with you at all times.
  • Know the locations of your nearest hospitals, police stations, fire departments and major hotels.
  • If you are being chased yelling fire will often get you a quicker response then yelling help.
  • Avoid talking to strangers on the street and avoid being herded towards alleys or blind spots.
  • Use the reflections in store windows to unobtrusively  observe if you are being followed.
  • Obtain your permit to carry a firearm and practice at the range on a regular basis.
  • Stay away from alleyways or cars when rounding a street corner.
  • Project a strong, confident, hard target image.
  • Muggers, thieves and rapists often display tell tale signs before they attack; if you see abnormal behaviors or body language from someone approaching you, get to a safe area immediately.

Everyone needs to draw a line in the sand for what they will and will not tolerate.  Here is my list of things I will not tolerate.

  • Anyone who tells me my political beliefs are wrong.  I am proud to be a Conservative Republican and truly believe that Conservative ideals are the way to go.
  • Anyone who tries to take away my second amendment rights to keep and bear arms.  I am a proud gun owner who trains and practices on a regular basis and who takes pride in my target shooting skills.
  • Anyone who does not prepare for disasters; and then expects others to drop everything to help them when they could have helped themselves.
  • Anyone with a welfare/entitlement mentality.  While I understand everyone goes through hard times at certain points in their lives; it is up to each individual to pull themselves up by their bootstraps and go on to achieve something worthwhile.
  • Anyone who is a racist.  There is no room for racism and no excuse for anyone who engages in racist tirades or racist hatred.  Hating others because of their race, creed, religion or origin is simply wrong thinking.
  • Anyone without morals or values.  It is not hard to do the right thing so make sure when the situation presents itself; that you choose to do the right thing.
  • Anyone engaging in violent crime.  You are the scum of the earth and you can expect to receive a just punishment.  Karma has a way of balancing the scales.

Everyone has an opinion on bug out bags and I won’t get into the merits of which is better, Molle or Alice Attachment methods, or which is better, Olive Drab, Woodland Camo, Multi Cam, SWAT Black or a non military/non law enforcement color for your pack.  What I will say is there are three common bug out bag mistakes that many people make; and once you are aware of them you can properly avoid them.

  1. Essential equipment must be easily accessible.  Things you need to access frequently should not be buried in the bottom of your pack or in hard to access areas.  If it’s essential and frequently used pack it so it is readily accessible.
  2. Adjust your packs shoulder straps and waist belt beforehand.  Don’t wait until an actual emergency occurs to find out your pack doesn’t fit.  Get it properly adjusted and ready to wear before you need to actually use it.
  3. Carry your pack as a test.  If you can’t make it to the end of the driveway without having to drop the pack then the pack and items inside are too heavy.  Don’t make your pack so heavy that it cannot be carried for a significant distance.  Determine what is really essential to your survival and carry only those items.

Escape and evasion skills can be useful in any SHTF, apocalyptic, disaster or survival scenario.  You need to be able to avoid hostile thugs, tracking dogs, ground or air surveillace, etc.  Running away from a threat may eventually make you an easier target to catch if you don’t develop proper escape and evasion plans and techniques.  You need to prepare for the worst possible scenarios and have a plan to deal with them.

Work on your noise discipline skills.  This means absolute silence.  Secure loose items on your pack or person as you can’t move silently if you are constantly making noise.  Even the sound of a snapping twig in the forest will carry a significant distance.  Use natural sounds such as thunder or wind to mask your noise, keep alarms and chimes on phones turned off and be aware that cell phones can be tracked when turned off unless you remove the battery first.

Light can be seen from great distances in the dark so avoid using light sources unless absolutely neccessary.  Avoid glow in the dark items, smoking, fires and any other sources which gives off light.  Reflections which can be given off from scopes or eyeglasses when positioned certain ways should also be carefully masked.

Circumstances will dictate your escape and evasion plans.  Have your workable plan ready now; keep what works and change what doesn’t.  Knowing the physical layout of the area you are in is also extremely helpful in any escape and evasion preperations.  Underground drainage systems can also be used to move through an area undetected as needed.  Be resourceful, creative and stay safe.

When your shot placement is off target there are 5 common reasons why this occurs.

  1. Jerking the trigger which causes the front sight to move off target.  Corrective action is to slowly and steadily squeeze the trigger keeping your front sight on target.
  2. Recoil anticipation which also causes the front sight to move off target.  Corrective action is not to anticipate the recoil before it actually occurs.
  3. Improper trigger finger placement, when the trigger is squeezed at an angle, this causes the muzzle to move off target.  Corrective action is to maintain a straight, even finger placement on the trigger prior to squeezing off a round.
  4. Inconsistencies in grip, stance, strength or alignment.  Corrective action is to maintain correct and consistent grip, stance, strength and alignment.
  5. Improper zeroing of weapon.  Corrective action is to properly zero your weapon.  A proper zero on a weapon enables you to consistently make your point of aim equal your point of impact.

Here’s the method I use to zero the iron sights on my AR-15 rifle.  The purpose of zeroing your sights is so that your point of aim equals your point of impact.  So here’s the method I use on my AR-15.  Feel free to ask any questions if any of this needs clarification 🙂

  1. Set your elevation knob to 8/3 low or if you are using the carry handle which is what I do, to 6/3 low.  The elevation knob will be located just below the peep sight.
  2. Flip the aperture to the long range sight (small peephole) although as you get older you may find the short range aperture (large peephole marked 0-2) easier to use and if that is the case then use the short range sight.
  3. From a steady position aim at the center bulls eye of your paper target, which should be set out at 25 meters which is equal to approximately 27.34 yards and fire a 6 round grouping.
  4. If your grouping has hit the bulls eye then there is no further adjustments needed.
  5. If the grouping has not hit the bulls eye; then estimate how many inches away from the bulls eye both vertically and horizontally you are and adjust as follows.
  6. Calculate your clicks of windage (left to right) required to move the impact point towards the center of the bulls eye.  On my AR-15 using .223 ammunition at 27.34 yards, each click equals 3/8 of an inch.  Then adjust by rotating the windage knob located on the right side of the carry handle.
  7. Calculate clicks of front sight elevation (up and down) required to move the impact point towards the center of the bulls eye.  On my AR-15 my elevation equals 3/8 of an inch for each click at the previously specified distance.
  8. Using a $7.00 or so front sight adjustment tool (much easier to use then a nail) depress the front sight plunger and turn the required number of clicks to move your point of impact towards the bulls eye.  Clockwise lowers the sight but raises the point of impact.  Counter clock wise raises the sight but lowers the point of impact.
  9. Fire another 6 rounds at the bulls eye.  If your grouping hits the bulls eye your adjustments are done.  If not, repeat steps 5 through 9 until your point of aim finally equals your point of impact.
