Martial law can be defined as the military taking control of a city, state or country and running it at their discretion.  The military would impose control on a civilian population when law and order cannot be maintained by the civil authorities.  Martial law scenarios would likely involve a restriction, erosion or suspension of your Constitutional rights by government decree.

In order to survive martial law the following things should be considered.  You will need to prepare beforehand by becoming as self reliant as possible; avoid traveling to any and all areas under martial law; do not draw attention to yourself or your family during times of martial law; stay informed and never accept the governments word at face value.  Remember your survival trumps obeying dictates.

A constant, armed military presence  and routine patrols by the military will be part of martial law along with curfews and vehicle checkpoints.  There will be people who masquerade as law enforcement to lure people into traps and attack them.  Do not fall for this.  You need to be extremely careful who you follow and whom you trust.

There are certain survival questions everyone should be aware of; and discussing these questions with close friends and family prior to a disaster or post apocalyptic scenario is a good idea.  Discussing, in advance, will help you to formulate plans of action to survive if and when a survival situation occurs.  Here are some of these questions.

  • How will you survive if there is a complete loss of law and order?  What if this scenario occurs when you are away from home?
  • If bands of looters are on your street causing havoc, how will you respond to that situation if law enforcement is no longer available?
  • How will you provide food and water for your family if grocery store shelves are empty and the supply chain re-stocking systems no longer exists?
  • How self sufficient are you if government support programs end or if electricity and garbage pickup are no longer operating or if currency becomes worthless?
  • How will you protect and provide for your family?  What will your policy be on providing assistance to friends, acquaintances, or strangers who are passing by?
  • Will you stay at your current location or head somewhere else?  If so what are the advantages and disadvantages to both options?

If Martial Law is ever declared there are some important elements you need to consider to assist with your survival plans.  Martial Law scenarios involve suspension of Constitutional rights, firearms confiscation, forced relocation, rationing of goods, curfews, summary arrests, etc.  The following may help you survive this nightmarish ordeal.

  • Never take the governments word about anything unless it is a threat against you.
  • Keep quiet about anything which could cause you trouble.
  • Your survival is much more important than obeying any dictates.
  • Avoid any areas where civilians are being rounded up, detained, or arrested.
  • Keep a low profile.
  • Maintain a high level of situational awareness.
  • Be very wary and cautious of whom you trust.
  • Establish reliable communications chains to determine which news is truthful and relevant, and which is untruthful and irrelevant.
  • Your family’s safety and security comes first always.

A riot is a form of civil disorder where groups of people can lash out in a sudden, intense, rash of violence against authority, other people, or property over perceived grievances, dissent, or injustices.  If a riot occurs be aware of the following.

  • If you are in your home, stay quiet and out of sight.  Don’t let the rioters see or hear you.
  • If you are in a vehicle do not stop your vehicle in a riot area for any reason.  You might be pulled from your car by the mob and beaten or killed.
  • Stay calm and be situationally aware.
  • Whenever you are in a public place be aware of potential escape routes in case a riot ensues.
  • If an area is a hotbed of political, or social tension, avoid that area at all costs.

Mobs are dangerous.  When groups of people are highly emotional, unreasonable, and unthinking, violence has the potential to occur.  If you come across a violent crowd, your number one goal should be to get to safety while remaining as inconspicuous and anonymous as possible.

Life is meant to be lived and enjoyed to the fullest.  You should live the way you want, work at something you enjoy doing, reside where you want and get as much satisfaction from life as possible.  Along with that however, it is also prudent to be prepared for situations in life where things are contra to your best interests.  Disasters such as social unrest, war, famine, societal collapse, escalations in violent crime, etc., are just some of the things that in this day and age are of concern to many.  So, along with enjoying the good times, it is also important to prepare for the bad times.

The following are the things I consider the most important for preparing for your own survival during times of crisis.

  • There is no such thing as having too much canned food or water set aside.  If disaster strikes, grocery stores may not be available to supplement your needs.  You must maintain a minimum of 3 months worth of food and water per person.
  • Yes, yes, yes you must have a sufficient amount of guns and ammunition and be well versed in their use.  You may have sufficient quantities of emergency supplies, but if others try and forcibly take them, you must be able to hold onto what you have.
  • People can and will panic during disasters so avoid large crowds and any areas subject to martial law and or rioting.
  • Use common sense and good judgement when deciding whom to trust.
  • Always keep  small amounts of cash on hand.  A disaster may render ATM’s and credit card systems useless.  If so, cash or barter may be the only ways to immediately conduct business.
  • Take responsibility for your own survival.  Ability without character is useless.  Remain as moral and as ethical during times of crisis as you deem prudent.

Here are some important considerations to think about if and when a disaster scenario occurs.  Being aware of them and having a workable plan could prove life saving if you find yourself in a disaster or post apocalypse situation.  After all it’s only a matter of time before you may have to deal with the following realities.

  • Neighbors in many places are not as willing to help out as they once were since both the moral and religous fiber of our society has crumbled away.
  • Pre-collapse civil disorder has already begun in places and stringent gun control laws in effect in certain locales makes defending yourself and your family that much harder.
  • If widespread disasters occur; expect that law enforcement will abandon their posts if it comes down to a choice of protecting society or protecting their own families.  Cops are only human and like the rest of us; family comes first.  (Remember Hurricane Katrina).
  • Looting, rioting and criminal behavior will be rampant and those who are well armed and well trained will have a better chance of not being victimized then those who are unarmed and poorly trained.
  • Disasters may force people to be self sufficient and self reliant for extended periods of time.  Are you adequately prepared for this?  Do you have the skills and gear required to survive?  If not you need to develop those skills and get that gear now.
  • Food, water, shelter, medical supplies, guns, ammo and related items will be survival essentials that you should have sufficient quantities of before disaster strikes.  Trying to get them afterwards will be extremely difficult if not almost impossible.
  • Trust needs to be earned.  Actions speak louder than words.   You are ultimately responsible for your own survival.
