In any disaster or survival scenario; being mentally prepared will be of paramount importance.  There is a great deal in life that a person can prepare for if they have the skills, knowledge, fortitude, gear, willpower, and the right attitude; and can utilize all of these things when they are needed.

A properly prepared mind is your greatest asset when it comes to dealing with natural and man-made disasters.  Being able to think your course of action through; without making rash or hasty decisions, will keep you from stumbling into situations which will increase your chances of encountering unintended dangerous consequences.

Having a prepared mind allows one to live with confidence and not in fear.  Being prepared also provides peace of mind which is absolutely essential to a persons overall quality of life.  Remember that bad times can bring out the worst in some people so it is important to be able to defend yourself and your loved ones if a short or long term disaster occurs.  Positive thinking leads to positive results. Negative thinking leads to negative results.  It’s your choice; so think positive and be prepared.

Let’s face it, apocalyptic scenarios, zombies, etc., are all the rage these days.  A benefit of this is it provides an opening to discuss what you would do if confronted with such scenarios. Whatever apocalyptic scenario life throws your way, the main thing to remember is that you must survive.  In order to survive it is important to be aware of the following.

  • While fear can be a normal response, one must come to terms with that fear in order to survive.
  • In a defensive capacity you must be able to out-think and out-fight your opponent.
  • Choose your survival weapons wisely and be proficient with their use.
  • Always be aware of your surroundings no matter how innocent they may look.
  • Know the difference between cover and concealment.  IE:  cover may hide you and will stop a bullet; concealment may hide you but will not stop a bullet.
  • Always have a backup plan and make sure your plans are adaptable to changing circumstances.
  • Act quickly and decisively but don’t overreact or act too soon.
  • There is no such thing as a fair fight or battle.  If your life is on the line you must win at any cost.  Make sure the unfair advantage is in your favor.

If the ultimate SHTF situation occurs and for each person that might be something different; it is important to avoid the following people if you want to survive.  Such situations might include martial law,  other forms of tyrannical oppression, civil unrest…………….well you get the idea.  So without further delay here are the types of people you need to avoid.

  • Anyone who says don’t bother being prepared; the governement will take care of you no matter what happens.
  • Anyone with an entitlement mentality.
  • Anyone with a why should I work for what I want when I can get welfare or other benefits for sitting back and doing nothing.
  • Anyone who says that there is nothing wrong with shredding the Constitution.
  • Anyone who supports disarming law abiding citizen’s.
  • Anyone who thinks martial law should be the law of the land.
  • Anyone who has a violent criminal mindset who thinks if I want something I’ll just take it by force.

In a survival situation it is important to stay calm and avoid being careless or impatient.  You must learn to recognize and control your fear.  Remember that there is always something you can do to improve your situation.  Consider all of the facts then make effective decisions.

Formulate responses based on safety, security and survival.  Use all of your senses and trust that gut feeling that you get that tells you that something is wrong.  Use common sense to avoid situations and locations that increase your risk of danger.  Remember maximize your distance to a threat; minimize yourself as a target and keep your muzzle between you and the threat.

Your survival depends upon applying survival principles and adapting them to your situation.  You must take responsibility for your own survival and not rely on anyone else to save you.  Outside help may be coming, but there will be times when outside help is not available, so you must rely on yourself.

Develop the will to survive.  You must have the mindset that you will survive.  Attitude and determination are great allies just as doubt and fear are your enemies.  Stay calm and don’t worry about things that you can’t control.  Keep your eyes and ears focused on the task at hand and be aware of your surroundings.  You must think clearly and react accordingly.

Whenever you enter someplace new; look for escape routes, improvised weapons and cover just in case any dangerous scenarios occur which require you to escape or defend.  Never submit to threats; and never allow an attacker to isolate you in a vehicle or an abandoned building.  If an attacker produces bindings such as a rope, cord, duct tape, zip ties, wire or handcuffs, you must not under any circumstances allow yourself to become incapacitated.

You must learn to be aggressive enough, quickly enough.  If you get into a vehicle; make sure the door will open from the inside before closing it, as some unscrupulous people deliberately disable the inside door handle making it non operational.  Make yourself a hard target; meaning that your actions and behaviors should present such a hazard to a criminal that they will bypass you in search of an easier target.  Mentally prepare yourself to win a violent confrontation at all costs.  You must be willing, ready and able to incapacitate a threat if neccessary.

Developing a tactical mindset is essential to surviving any type of disaster or violent scenario.  Skills with weapons is essential but it is not the only thing that will help you to survive.  Your mental attitude when confronted with a violent encounter is just as important as your weapons skills.

There are predators out there who have no regard for your life or the lives of your loved ones; instead they see you simply as an obstacle to obtaining your goods and other valuables.  They will think nothing of killing you just to steal your wallet, laptop or IPhone.

The following are some important methods to developing a tactical mindset.

  • Realization that not everyone has your best interests as their primary motivation.
  • Knowing that you must defend yourself without hesitation when confronted by violence.
  • Maintaining an appropriate level of situational awareness combined with the ability to act accordingly as needed.
  • When confronted with violence you must be prepared to effectively deal with the situation.  You must avoid the “deer in the headlights” phenomena.
  • Visualize situations you might find yourself in and visualize your responses to those situations. Visualization is a good form of practice and gives one a foundation of how to react if such situations do presents themselves.
  • Know where your weapons are at all times.  Make sure you can get to them quickly enough if needed.
  • Pay attention to all target indicators.  If something or someone seems out of place pay specific attention to it.
  • Maximize your distance to potential threats.
  • Use good judgement and common sense when dealing with people, places and things.
