With the myriad of shotgun choices available today; here are my reasons for preferring the Mossberg 590A1 12 gauge pump action shotgun to all others.

  1. The shell tube holds 8 + 1 rounds of 2 3/4″ 00 buckshot.
  2. It’s a combat ready shotgun, solidly built with a heavy, firm feel.
  3. It is smooth operating and has a good fit and durable finish.
  4. In many range session uses; I have never experienced any malfunctions such as a double feed or failure to eject.
  5. Shotgun was designed to function in extreme environments and can take some knocking about.
  6. Can easily accomodate a wide range of accessories such as side saddles, heat shields, flashlight holders, breacher barrels, etc.
  7. Comes standard with a good quality adjustable ghost ring rear sight and a fiber optic front sight.
  8. The heavy weight of the shotgun helps with recoil control.
  9. Can be used with a 1 point, 2 point or 3 point sling.
  10. Trigger group and safety are metal instead of plastic and the safety is well positioned on the top of the weapon,
  11. The barrel finish is parkerized.
  12. Weight empty is 7.5 pounds, barrel length is 20″ and overall length is 41″

I’ve tried them all……..Mossbergs, Remingtons, H&R’s, Benellis, etc., and in my estimation there is one shotgun that stands out above all the rest when it comes to home defense applications.  My selection for the best home defense shotgun is the Mossberg 590A1, 12 gauge 9 shot.  The following are the specs for this weapon.

590A1 – 9 Shot – 12 Gauge
– Barrel Length: 20″
– Sights: Ghost Ring
– Choke: Cylinder Bore
– Overall Length: 41″
– Finish: Parkerized
– Stock: Synthetic
– Weight: 7-1/4 lbs
– Origin: Made in the USA

Additional options to add include a barrel mounted flashlight, single point sling adapter, and two side saddle ammo carriers; one on the side of the stock and the other on the opposite side of the ejection port.

While visiting the local gunstore this weekend I just couldn’t pass up the opportunity to add yet another home defense shotgun to my collection.  I saw it, wanted it, tried it and knew I had to have it.  This time around it was the Mossberg 590A1, 12 gauge pump action shotgun which varies in some ways from the Mossberg 590 I already own.  Note the 590A1 and the 590 are two different models.

The 590A1 is heavy and was designed specifically for the military who wanted a heavier, reliable shotgun that could withstand some bumps and dings and could function well in adverse weather conditions.  The barrel is a heavy walled 20 inch barrel,  has a metal trigger assembly and metal safety button, has an 8+1 shot magazine tube, a ghost ring rear sight and an orange quick acquisition front sight and cycles quickly and effortlessly between rounds.

I added a quality Outdoor Connections carry strap, an ATI flashlight clamp which secures a Surefire G2 flashlight and an ATI sidesaddle to the buttstock for carrying additional rounds. The weapon is reliable and is a welcome addition to my home defense setup.

Mossberg 590A1 Special Purpose 12 Gauge Pump Action Shotgun with top folding stock,  8+1 rounds

The Mossberg 590A1 Pump Action Shotgun (12 gauge) currently serves as my primary home defense shotgun.  This shotgun can hold 8+1 rounds of 12 gauge 2 3/4″ shells and can stand up to a variety of adverse weather conditions.  The barrel of this shotgun is a 20″ heavy profile barrel and the weapon itself is durable, solid, well built, operates smoothly and cycles shells effectively.

This combat ready shotgun can accomodate 12 gauge 2 3/4″ shells and 12 gauge 3″ shells and works well with both buckshot and birdshot loads.  The trigger pull is comfortable and the pump mechanism is smooth and reliable.  The safety is located on the top of the receiver and is thumb operated.

The safety, when the red indicator is showing equals ready to fire and with the red indicator covered equals on safe.  On my particular 590A1 I have the ATI top folding stock installed with built in shotshell holder.  The top folding stock when folded allows for convenient storage but when firing I always unfold the stock into its full length configuration.
