In any disaster or apocalyptic scenario you will find that some people will behave irrationally and may try to take advantage of these chaotic and catastrophic situations.  Expect these people to commit criminal acts; so be prepared to defend yourself and your family.  All of these people will want something from you and many of them will do nothing to prepare; but will still feel they are owed something.  Just because a disaster has ocurred does not mean the attitude of these people will change.

Do not allow strangers to latch onto you.  They can prove to be very dangerous.  Your goal is to prepare to ensure your family’s survival; not the survival of every stranger that passes by.  You must be prepared to defend yourself and your family from those who would try and harm you and steal your food, water, guns, ammo, first aid kits, bug out bags, and other survival supplies.  If strangers had the chance to prepare and chose not to, it is not your responsibility to provide for them.

Your survival skills and your supplies will not be able to save everyone but they can help save the people who matter to you the most.  You must learn to trust your instincts and stay alert, avoid becoming predictable, be observant, familiarize yourself with your surroundings, learn to move quietly in all environments and avoid large groups of people.  In any survival situation your attitude is everything.  Pay attention to your gut instincts as they just might save your life.

If you want to be a survivor and persevere during harsh economic, social, and political times; or during civil unrest, or any other type of SHTF situation, it is imperative to pay attention to the following rules.

  • You need to be aware of who and what is around you at all times; this is referred to as situational awareness.
  • Trust your gut instincts.  If something feels wrong or seems dangerous then it usually is wrong or dangerous.
  • Actions speak louder than words.  Just because someone says they will do something does not mean they will follow through.  Make sure if someone commits to doing something that they actually do it.
  • Have confidence in yourself and your abilities.  If you act vulnerable, insecure and weak then you can expect to be treated that way.
  • Be bold, dynamic, and conduct your business with authority.
  • Maintain a positive mental attitude.  Positive attitudes attract positive results.  Negative attitudes attract negative results.
  • Make yourself a hard target.  It is the easy targets who are attacked.
  • Do not think or act like a victim and avoid having an entitlement mentality.
  • Not everyone can be trusted.  Be careful whom you trust.
  • Know your surroundings.
  • Know the best strike points to incapacitate an attacker; and if attacked do whatever it takes to win.
  • Be proficient with your defensive weapons.
  • If you have to fight back; fight back hard.

If society crumbles due to economic, political, or social reasons, you can expect violent crime, looting, rape, assault, murder, etc., to reach unprecedented levels never before seen in modern times.  Police will be unable or unwilling to respond to cries for help as they will be looking to protect there own families. In short you are on your own and you will need to be prepared accordingly to deal with this type of scenario.

If law and order breaks down you must be sufficiently armed with the will and the skill to do what you can to protect yourself and your family.  Do not go looking for trouble; but if trouble finds you there may not be anyone else available to assist you in many circumstances.

Two main types of threats you might face are career criminals who use the societal collapse as just another excuse to commit violent crimes and formerly good people who have been driven to do bad things based on circumstances; meaning they didn’t prepare and now they are trying to take food, water and other supplies from those who did prepare.

If you don’t own firerams or have access to them and you don’t know how to use them efficiently and properly; you will find yourself at a distinct disadvantage.  You should familiarize yourself with firearms and the proper methods of loading, unloading, target acquisition, maintenance, and which firearms, gauges, and calibers are best for which situations.  Be prepared because when all is said and done you are ultimately responsible for your own safety and security.

Can your cell phone give away your location?  Yes it can.  Anytime it has a power source attached it can be tracked; which means simply turning it off is not enough.  If it has access to power, via a battery, as an example it can send and receive tracking data from nearby towers.  Your signal can be triangulated between towers which can then identify your position whether the cell phone is in use or not. Removing the battery is the only way to eliminate this tracking; however, once you re-insert the battery, it re-registers the network and your location can once again be revealed.

In case you weren’t aware.  Your U.S. Passport obtained from October 2006 forward contains an RFID (Radio Frequency Identification Chip) which contains a passport holders personal identification data. Data includes name, date of birth, nationality, gender, place of birth, as well as a digitized photo of that person.  The chip’s data will match the paper portion data of the passport. The RFID chip allows passports to be scanned remotely and can present safety and privacy violations.  Other issues include remote hacking of data, whether other unspecified information is also contained within, and how tightly your movements can be tracked when the passport is carried about as part of a person’s activities.

Periodically I like to post survival/preparedness questions to give my readers an opportunity to share their thoughts, experiences and other related discussion ideas.  So without further hesitation here are this weeks survival/preparedness questions.  What scenario of a survival/preparedness nature do you anticipate you will have to face in the near future?  What steps have you taken to prepare for such an event?  I’m looking forward to everyone’s responses.
