So you have your bug out bag pre-packed and ready to go………but will you be able to carry it if you need to use it?  We all know as we get older it becomes harder and harder to carry weight any significant distance; just think about the differences in what you can do physically when you were 20 or 30 years old as compared to 50 years old!

With that said here’s an everyday exercise you can consider doing right before bedtime.  Put on your bug out bag and walk up and down the stairs in your home 1 time, then do 1 deep knee bend.  The next night go up and down the stairs 2 times and do 2 deep knee bends.  The next night go up and down the stairs 3 times and do 3 deep knee bends and continue the pattern increasing by 1 each night.

Regardless of your body type if you can’t carry your bug out bag strapped to your back for a significant distance; you are going to be at a disadvantage, if you need to set out on foot with your supplies to avoid a disaster.  So have a well stocked bug out bag and the ability to carry it and use it.

The following is a list of fiction books I have written.  You can get a free preview of my first zombie fiction book or my first five post apocalyptic fiction survival books by clicking on the book cover images to the left of this blog post, on my blog page, which will take you to the Amazon.com website. Well I thought this day would never come but I’m finally making the switch.  I’m replacing my medium woodland camo Alice/Malice pack that I spent time customizing to get it just right with a Condor 3 day assault pack in O.D. Green.  As I get older comfort becomes more and more important and no matter how you might try and convince yourself otherwise; an Alice Pack is nowhere near as comfy as today’s modern, well padded packs.

I’m going to start changing my methods for this bug out bag.  My Alice Pack was a 100% dedicated bug out bag; the new Condor one will be set up to cover a hybrid of uses.  The new bag will be set up on a 50/50 ratio meaning 50% of the space will be used for bug out essentials and the other 50% of the space will be used for when I need to take a bag with me on vacation.  I’ll call it a multipurpose bug out bag/get home bag/travel bag or just an All Purpose Bag for short.  As soon as Amazon delivers it I’ll set it up and let you know how it functions.

Here’s the specs on the bag:

  • – Large load cargo capacity compartment with separate pocket to fit up to two 3L hydration bladders. – Olive Drab contour shoulder straps with D-Ring for equipment attachment, sternum strap and waist belt. – External side compression straps.
  • – Heavy-Duty carry and drag handle. – Two double zipper pulls on the main compartment for easy access. – Individual foam pad back panel for extra comfort and maximum airflow. – Grommets on all compartments for drainage.
  • Total of seven compartments: – Main Compartment with gear straps to secure gears and two extra mesh pockets. – Second Compartment contains three map/document pockets, two radio pockets, and penholders.
  • – Two large pockets on the back, bottom pocket (12.5″ x 6″ x 3″) with three elastic closure mesh pockets and a zipper mesh pocket. – Two side pockets (9″ x 5″ x 2.5″) one on each side. – One Compartment for hydration systems.

I also ordered a seperate Condor rip stop EMT pouch, a Condor Gear Pouch and a Condor 2.5L Hydration Bladder.  I’m looking forward to setting everything up.  Come on Amazon; hurry up 🙂

After sitting on my back deck this evening and enjoying a cigar and a can of diet root beer soda; I thought I’d share a few things about writing that perhaps some of you may find helpful.

  • Write about things that you enjoy writing about.
  • You will get good reviews and you will get bad reviews.  Appreciate and be grateful for the good reviews and ignore the bad reviews; unless there is something valid which you can learn from them.
  • The things that some people like about your books will be the exact same things that others dislike about them.  Don’t let that discourage you.
  • Book sales have a rhythm all their own.  Some weeks you will feel like you have reached astronomically great sales goals and other weeks not so much.  Books will sell; just don’t worry if there is an off week when it comes to sales.
  • Be appreciative and thankful that people take the time to read your books.  If they have a comment or a question about your books, make the time to respond in a timely and polite manner.
  • But most importantly buy one or more of my books today as they are an enjoyable read and although fiction; you still might learn a thing or two 🙂  Plus buying them is the only surefire way that scientists have discovered to prevent the end of civilization as we know it lol 🙂

Owning  firearms for home defense is a responsibility that one should not take lightly.  Here are a few things to remember about your home defense firearms.

  • Make sure you are properly trained on the use of your home defense firearms.  Make sure you are proficient with loading, unloading, clearing malfunctions and acquiring your target.
  • Go to the range regularly and properly practice, practice, practice.
  • Along with range time mentally visualize the process for loading, unloading, clearing malfunctions and aquiring your target.  Visualization is an important aspect of training.
  • Make sure you are properly licensed as needed.
  • Never ever under any circumstances leave a loaded firearm unattended.
  • Store your bulk ammo and your firearms in seperate locations.
  • Keep your firearms secure and well hidden when not in use.
  • This point will raise debate as many people keep their home defense handgun loaded and on their nightstand when they go to bed.  I do not.  My preferred method when I go to bed is to unload my EDC handgun, verifying that the chamber is empty and keep the loaded magazine on my nightstand next to the bed.  I keep my unloaded handgun is in a holster attached to the bedframe just below the nightstand out of sight.  I can, if awoken slap the loaded magazine into the handgun and have a round chambered in about 3 seconds……….I know I’ve practiced this frequently.
  • My home defense firearms are divided into three categories.  Handguns for home defense against an intruder.  Shotguns for home defense against multiple intruders.  Rifles for home defense in the event of looting or rioting.
  • Be safe, be careful and have the proper mindset when handling any type of firearm.

My Fourth Book; American Rebellion Book 4 of the Revolution should be out in less than a month.  As my three previous fiction survival books are already available at Amazon.com and I’d like to think worth reading; they provide a good background to following the story line and the characters.  I appreciate all of the support and positive comments those of you who have read my books have shared with me and I look forward to additional comments as well.

So The SHTF and an ultimate survival scenario is thrust upon you.  When all is said and done you need to make sure that whatever rifle you consider your primary survival rifle is up to the task.  So ask yourself the following questions to see if your survival rifle is the best choice for your all around needs.

  • Is the rifle accurate enough?
  • Is ammo plentiful and do you have a method to carry all that additional ammo?
  • Are spare parts available?
  • Do you have enough reliable mags and a method to carry the mags?
  • Is the rifle durable enough?
  • Do any of the modifications make it too fragile for heavy duty use?
  • Is the rifle easily transportable?
  • Can you use a carry strap with the rifle?  They can get heavy when carrying for extended periods of time without one.
  • Is the rifle usable at night and in extreme weather conditions?

There are generally two types of 2 way radios used for communications.  VHF – Very High Frequency, used for short distance communications which generally work using the line of sight method meaning there should be no obstacles in between such as mountains, tall buildings, etc., and HF – High Frequency used for long distance communications.

Using the 2 way radio differs from using a cell phone in that you cannot speak and listen at the same time.  Your radio frequency can be heard by other listeners on the same frequency so never trasmit sensative or personal information.

Most of the common handheld 2 way radios will offer 22 channels and up to 121 privacy codes.  Look for  radio channels and frequencies that are not being used by anyone else.  Have primary and secondary channels and frequencies determined for members of your group.  As an example, your primary channel might be 3 and your frequency 19.  Your secondary might be channel 4 frequency 28.

Perform radio checks frequently to make sure the radio is working properly.  Make sure the battery is charged, the power is on and the volume is high enough to hear any calls.  Memorize your call sign and others call signs which are on air identifiers other than your names.  Do not use your real names, use call signs only on any 2 way radio communication.

Your communications should be short, clear and concise.  In the following examples, let’s designate your call sign as Whiskey Tango Nine and your recipients call sign as Alpha Charlie One.

Do not interrupt if a station is being used unless it is an emergency.  If it is an emergency press the PTT (Push to talk button) and as an example say Break, Break, Break, This is Whiskey Tango Nine, with an emergency message for Alpha Charlie One, over.

If the station is clear and it is regular, non emergency communications, Press the PTT (Push to talk) button and after 2 seconds say the recipients call sign twice followed by your call sign and the word over.

Example of you sending:  Alpha Charlie One, Alpha Charlie One, This is Whiskey Tango Nine, Over.

Recipients response:  Whiskey Tango Nine, This Alpha Charlie One, Go Ahead, Over.

Example of you sending:  Meet at rendezvous point Omega, Acknowledge, Over.

Recipients response:  Wilco (means message acknowledged), Over.

Example of you sending:  This is Whiskey Tango Nine, Out. (Communication ended)

The phonetic alphabet is commonly used during 2 way radio communications for spelling out words and is listed below.

A – ALPHA
B – BRAVO
C – CHARLIE
D – DELTA

E – ECHO
F – FOXTROT
G – GOLF
H – HOTEL
I – INDIA

J – JULIET
K – KILO

L – LIMA
M – MIKE
N – NOVEMBER
O – OSCAR

P – PAPA
Q – QUEBEC

R – ROMEO
S – SIERRA
T – TANGO
U – UNIFORM
V – VICTOR
W – WHISKEY
X – X-RAY
Y – YANKEE
Z – ZULU

There is a great disturbance these days in the Constitutional force.  If you haven’t noticed; although many of us have, there is a movement afoot to legislate and pass as many unconstitutional laws as possible.  The liberal mantra of let’s ignore the Constitution and pass whatever legislation we want is alive and well; as they figure the average voter will be too concerned with what Kim Kardashian is doing on her TV show to bother to care about their individual rights and freedoms being systematically taken away.  Pay attention voters; if the course of this country is not changed soon then America as most of us know it and remember it will be gone and in its place will be the United States Soviet Socialist Republic.  Stand tall freedom loving Americans or our freedoms will soon be gone.
