Survival and preparedness are important concepts to master.  The following are some often overlooked survival tips which should be considered.

  • Get in the habit of carrying essentail every day carry gear on you.  It may be all you have if you are away from home and a disaster strikes.  Some considerations to keep with you are your handgun, spare ammo, car keys, folding knife, flashlight and identification.
  • Always stay properly hydrated.
  • Eye protection is a must either by using prescription or non prescription glasses.  If your vision is damaged and you can’t see your chances of survival are greatly diminished.
  • Communications are essential.  Keep in mind that a text takes up less bandwidth then a cell phone call; so if a cell phone call won’t go through due to an overload of the system during a disaster, a text still might.
  • Considerations for emergency shelter should factor in abandoned houses, garages and factories.  There are lots of abandoned buildings which could be used as emergency shelter if needed.  Stay concealad and watch your intended shelter location carefully to ensure it’s abandoned before approaching.
  • Some suburban needs may be different than urban needs when it comes to survival and preparedness and vice versa.
  • Avoid checkpoints as any gear you have may be confiscated.
  • Maintain a positive, confident attitude.  Fear and self doubt will reduce your chances of survival.

Prepare yourself for a struggle.  The aftermath of a long term SHTF situation will be that once anything you’ve stockpiled is gone; you will be going back to some very basic living.  You will have to develop the skills needed to be self sufficient.  You must be adaptable to changing circumstances.

In a post SHTF world there may be no Walmarts or gunshops or gunsmiths so you need to have weapons, mags, ammo and replacement parts avalable and know how to do basic firearms repairs.  12 gauge shotguns, military style carbines and rifles, and handguns will be essential.

Your survival will be heavily influenced by how you react to a crisis or a disaster.  The actions you take will have either a positive or a negative effect on your life.  Even the simplest things left unattended can lead to unanticipated consequences.  Don’t panic and stay calm.  Maintain a positive attitude as positive thinking creates positive results.  Establish priorities, stay organized and stay informed.

If you survive a disaster such as a nuclear detonation, radiation then becomes the silent killer which you need to avoid.  Radiation is measured in (mSv) millisieverts and a persons normal exposure to radiation in any given year under normal conditions is about 2.4 mSv.  The following is an indicator of what various radiation readings are in millisieverts; and what can constitute exposure, along with the effects of exposure.

  • 0.01 mSv = A dental x-ray.
  • 0.1 mSv = Dose of radiation from a chest x – ray
  • 0.4 mSv = Mammogram breast x-ray exposure.
  • 2.4 mSv = Natural radiation most people are normally exposed to each year.
  • 10 mSv = Radiation dose in full body CT scan.
  • 15 mSv = CT scan abdomen and pelvis.
  • 100 mSv = Lowest annual dose at which any increase in cancer is clearly evident.
  • 700 mSv = Vomiting within hours of exposure.
  • 750 mSv = Hair loss two weeks after exposure.
  • 1,000 mSv = radiation sickness and nausea but may not cause death.
  • 5,000 mSv = Single dose would kill half of those exposed within a month.
  • 10,000 mSv= Destruction of intestinal lining, internal bleeding and death within two weeks of exposure.
  • 20,000 mSv = Cognitive impairment, convulsions and death within hours of receiving dose of radiation.

The following are some often overlooked survival tips.

  • The code for SOS by flashlight is 3 short flashes, 3 long flashes, 3 short flashes, pause then repeat.
  • If you are storing both gasoline and diesel fuel, always store gasoline in red containers and diesel fuel in yellow containers.
  • Never use diesel fuel in a gasoline engine and never use gasoline in a diesel fuel engine.
  • An emergency electric siphon pump can be made for about $20.00 with components available at most hardware stores.
  • The pages of a phone book can be used as a substitute for toilet paper when needed.
  • Most canned foods are edible past their expiration dates although their nutritional and taste value may diminish.
  • A gallon of water weighs about 8 pounds so factor that in when deciding how much water to carry.
  • During a winter power outage, if your generator is not available, perishable foods can be temporarily stored in snowbanks.
  • In a hostile situation there is a difference between guarding the gate and going out in search of the dragon.

The majority of suburban crimes are considered crimes of opportunity; meaning a criminal comes upon a home or a person that they feel would be easy to rob or victimize and attempts to take advantage of the situation.  Make sure you are diligent about securing your home and are equally diligent about projecting an image of confidence and strength so that you appear to be a hard target to anyone looking to do you harm.

When you and your home are hard targets, criminals will avoid you and your residence and look for easier targets of opportunity.  Strive to keep your home well secured on the interior, exterior and the perimeter and make yourself a person who refuses to be a victim, thus ensuring your personal safety and security.

When the SHTF, avoid checkpoints where you will be re-routed or sent to a shelter.   Why?  The chances are high that any survival supplies you have will be confiscated and emergency shelters will not allow you entry with your self defense firearms.

If you are in a vehicle, stay off the main roads……if you are on foot, stay off the roads entirely and move through the woods or near railroad tracks that run parallel to your intended destination.  Your intent is to move without being seen which means do not walk along the sidewalks or down the middle of the road.

Being sufficiently armed and properly trained is of paramount importance and essential to your survival.  An everyday carry handgun with proper training is a good idea to consider.  You do have your permit already right!!!! If not take the appropriate training and get one immediately before it is too late.

If the SHTF and food and water become hard for people to locate, expect government officials, police and fire departments to consider you a hoarder if they find out you have bulk stocked up on food and water.  Keep these preparations to yourself; as being prepared to them will be nothing more than an opportunity to these officials to seize your items and redistribute them to the masses.  Why should a 3 month supply of food and water needed for your family be taken and given to others who were not properly prepared!  Use stealth when stocking up on your survival supplies.

Do not buy a survival retreat as a secondary bug out location even if it is deep in the woods and off the beaten path unless you or someone in your family is going to live there year round.  Here’s why!  Let’s say you’ve got a nice retreat location 60 or 90 or 120 miles away from your primary residence, in a location you think is hidden from sight and you’ve stocked it with supplies such as food, water, guns, ammo, etc.  If you are not living there year round, here is what’s likely going to happen.

If the SHTF, others who are roaming around looking for a place to hunker down and survive are going to find your uninhabited retreat and make themselves right at home.  When you show up waving your deed showing you own the place are they going to care?  Heck no.  You will likely be chased off or worse yet; shot and killed and your stashed survival supplies will be used by these new occupants.

Unless you are going to live year round at your retreat so you can use it for yourself and your families survival and be there to defend it; it is a better decision to fortify and protect your existing home. Hopefully that home is already in a rural area or the suburbs as remaining in the city if the SHTF is only asking for trouble.

What is one of the most dangerous scenarios that can occur in a SHTF situation?  The answer is other people.  Anytime other people are cold, wet, hungry, scared, in panic mode and unprepared to the point that it is a life or death situation for them; the thin veneer of civilization will fade away and they will resort to their base animal instincts to try and take what you have by any means necessary; without regard to your safety or your life.

Having a SHTF supply of food, water, medicine, clothing, fuel, etc., is not enough.  You must have the means, determination, weapons, ammo, training and skills to keep what you have set aside for your families survival from those who did not prepare and will try and take your supplies.  Need proof, just look at what happened during the LA riots or Hurricane Katrina.  Need I say more!

Do you have a semi automatic rifle or handgun that malfunctions from time to time where the shell casing does not eject after firing and then prevents the follow up round from loading?  Try the following.  When you load your mags place one less round in the mag then they are capable of holding.  As examples my AR-15 rifle has  detachable mags that holds 30 rounds but I always load them with only 29 rounds each.  My Smith & Wesson M&P 45 handgun has detachable mags that hold 10 rounds but  I always load them with only 9 rounds each.  In many cases this will fix feeding malfunctions.
