There are certain survival questions everyone should be aware of; and discussing these questions with close friends and family prior to a disaster or post apocalyptic scenario is a good idea.  Discussing, in advance, will help you to formulate plans of action to survive if and when a survival situation occurs.  Here are some of these questions.

  • How will you survive if there is a complete loss of law and order?  What if this scenario occurs when you are away from home?
  • If bands of looters are on your street causing havoc, how will you respond to that situation if law enforcement is no longer available?
  • How will you provide food and water for your family if grocery store shelves are empty and the supply chain re-stocking systems no longer exists?
  • How self sufficient are you if government support programs end or if electricity and garbage pickup are no longer operating or if currency becomes worthless?
  • How will you protect and provide for your family?  What will your policy be on providing assistance to friends, acquaintances, or strangers who are passing by?
  • Will you stay at your current location or head somewhere else?  If so what are the advantages and disadvantages to both options?

In order to survive; one has to be prepared.  You must prepare as much as possible for things which could happen and have an adaptable plan for dealing with these scenarios when they occur.  Keep a watchful eye on those in power with the realization that they don’t always have your best interests in mind.  Protecting your family and yourself, if martial law occurs, or when social chaos is present is of the utmost importance.

Shelter, food, water, and security are the four main areas that you need to be aware of in the event of a local, regional or national crisis.  Make sure you have sufficient supplies on hand in case leaving your home is unsafe, or restricted based on specific circumstances.

Do you have enough food and water if transportation and distribution networks are suspended?  Can you defend yourself, your family and your home if looters and marauders are on the loose looking for supplies and victims?  Criminals are always the first to try and take advantage of any situation where law and order has broken down.  Prepare yourself accordingly and stay safe.  In any disaster scenario there usually are no second chances when it comes to your survival and the survival of your family members.  Prepare now; before it is too late.

There are three kinds of people in the world today.  Those who are predators, those who are prey and those who refuse to be either.  In order to survive in today’s world or any type of post apocalyptic world of the future you must inwardly develop a warrior spirit; a mindset that says I refuse to be a victim.  Everyone must fight for something at some point in their lives and it is imperative that when these encounters take place, that you emerge victorious.

Nobody can tell you what your threat will look like; but when a threat attacks, you must be prepared physically, mentally and emotionally to defend yourself.  If something looks wrong or feels wrong then it is wrong.  Don’t ignore that inner sixth sense that warns you of impending danger.  Remember the rule of three M’s. 1 – Maximize your distance to the threat.  2 – Minimize yourself as a target.  3 – Muzzle always between you and the threat.

Survival is a combination of skills, mindset and gear.  Make sure you train regularly to keep your survival skills sharp.  Keep the proper positive, confident mindset and keep any gear which will keep you alive nearby.  Also make sure you are fully competent with each piece of gear.

In a survival situation there are no re-do’s.  You only get one chance to do it right and survive the first time.  Take the time to train and plan accordingly.  After all it’s your life; make sure you keep it by doing what is necessary to stay alive.

Whether it’s zombies, societal unrest, war, famine, or natural disasters; you need to anticipate and be prepared for the unexpected.  Making the right choices in what items to prep, what skills to acquire and what defensive capabilities to have can make all the difference in the world.  Having a workable survival plan and the will and the skill to follow through with your plan are of paramount importance.  Let’s look at a few other considerations.

  • Weapons – When it comes to handguns, shotguns and rifles look to what the pro’s use.  Law enforcement and the military tend to carry weapons that have stood the test of time; so these are good starting points.
  • Ammunition – Common calibers are usually best.  Try to avoid calibers that are hard to locate.  Again look to what cops and the military tend to use.
  • Knives – Robust, durable and strong are the features you must have in a knife.  If it can’t hold together when put to heavy duty use then it’s not the right knife to own.  When you absolutely, positively need a knife; no other tool will do.
  • Personal Protection – Your life is always more important than some scumbag thug or criminal.
  • First Aid – Have a well stocked kit and know how to use every item in that kit.
  • Route Planning – Know which routes are safe to travel and which are not.  Learn how to stay off of main roads and get to safe destinations using backroads which will tend to be less crowded.
  • Fuel – Know how to stabilize it and store it properly.
  • Bug Out Bag – Pack it with essentials for a minimum of 72 hours and have it ready at all times.  Make sure you can carry it for a significant distance as it does you little good if you can’t carry the weight past the end of your driveway.
  • Communications – Reliable information is crucial to survival so have good communications protocols in place.
  • Mindset – Be alert, confident, a positive thinker and maintain situational awareness and control.

The 12 Gauge Pump Action Shotgun is best suited for close range, short duration, defensive conflicts that do not require a significant amount of rounds per target.  In terms of close range stopping power, the 12 Gauge Pump Action Shotgun using 2 3/4″ 00 buckshot is one of the best available small arms to defensively end hostilities at an effective range of 0 – 25 yards which makes it an effective home defense weapon.

Proficiency with a 12 Gauge shotgun is only one part of an overall defensive solution.  It is just as important to have the right mindset and the right attitude.  You should practice defensive shotgun techniques at reasonable intervals, but also remember it is not only the shotgun which can save your life but the skill and determination of the person defensively using the shotgun.

Recommended 12 Gauge Pump Action Shotguns include the Remington 870 Express Tactical, Remington 887 Nitro Mag, Mossberg 500, Mossberg 590, Mossberg 590A1, Mossberg 835 and the H&R Pardner.  The ideal defensive shotgun should be a 12 Gauge Pump Action Shotgun with a short 18.5″ smoothbore barrel.  My personal favorite is the Mossberg 590A1 although I have used all of the above referenced shotguns extensively.

The shotgun is a tool which is designed for a mission so any modification which enhances the mission should be considered worthwhile.  Recommended shotgun accessories include a Pachmeyer recoil pad, ATI heatshield, ATI side saddle for stock mounting,  TacStar side saddle for receiver mounting, Surefire or UTG light, Blackhawk single point sling with single point sling adapter, Molle ammo pouches and a sufficient supply of 12 Gauge 2 3/4″ 00 buckshot ammunition.

Train with your shotgun and make sure you know how to handle it properly.  Fundamentals should include safe handling, loading, unloading, clearing malfunctions, target acquisition and proper shot placement.  When used at close range, hitting an attacker with a well placed round of 00 buckshot = the equivilant mass of 4.5 rounds of 9mm ammo.

Remember that using your shotguns sights is essential at all but the closest of ranges.  The more distant the enemy, the more refined and precise your sight alignment must be.  Being prepared is of the utmost importance; and remember to stay safe.

What is a prepper?  An interesting question and I propose the following answer. A prepper is a person who seeks to be prepared for things that life might throw your way.  A person who is self reliant when it comes to survival, preparedness and protection.  A person who understands the fragility of society and who uses effective reasoning and decision making skills to make sure that they thrive and survive.  A person who is respectful of other people and their property and expects the same considerations in return.   So are you a prepper?
