I’ve been fortunate over the years to have had the opportunity to try most of the major pump action 12 gauge shotguns on the market today.  Many are well made, some not so much.  While many pump action shotguns will do an excellent job for home defense my overall selection for best 12 gauge pump action shotgun based on durability, reliability, accuracy, and ease of adding mission specific accessories goes to the Mossberg 590A1.

  • 590A1 12 gauge pump action shotgun  –  8+1 rounds, parkerized 20 inch barrel and receiver, topped with ghost-ring sights to get on target fast, easy to add sidesaddles to both the stock and opposite the ejector port if so desired, easy to add light and light mount, easy to add heat shield.

So what 12 gauge pump action shotgun do you prefer for your primary home defense shotgun?

So you’ve looked outside and zombies are everywhere.  Here are ten ways to survive the zombie apocalypse if you ever find yourself in that scenario.

  1. Stay quiet.  Zombies are attracted to noise.  Even if you want to scream, or shout or yell, don’t do it.
  2. Do not travel alone or at night especially if you are on foot.
  3. Have a safe, secure, well fortified location to live.
  4. Have plenty of guns, ammo, clubs, knives, tomahawks and other sharp weapons just in case you have to dispatch a zombie or two from time to time.  Remember it takes damage to the head and brain to kill them.
  5. Have food, water, medical supplies and other essential survival gear stocked up.
  6. Stay in shape physically, mentally and emotionally.
  7. Be careful whom you trust.  People aren’t always what they appear to be.
  8. Have a primary, secondary and tertiary survival plan.
  9. Observe proper light and noise discipline.
  10. It will be easier to survive if you are with a group of people that you trust; and can be relied upon when the SHTF.

Martial law can be defined as the military taking control of a city, state or country and running it at their discretion.  The military would impose control on a civilian population when law and order cannot be maintained by the civil authorities.  Martial law scenarios would likely involve a restriction, erosion, or suspension of your Constitutional rights by government decree.

In order to survive martial law the following things should be considered.  You will need to prepare beforehand by becoming as self reliant as possible; avoid traveling to any and all areas under martial law, do not draw attention to yourself or your family during times of martial law, stay informed, and never accept the governments word at face value.  Remember your survival trumps obeying dictates.

A constant, armed military presence  and routine patrols by the military will be part of martial law along with curfews and vehicle checkpoints.  There will be people who masquerade as law enforcement to lure people into traps and attack them.  Do not fall for this.  You need to be extremely careful who you follow and whom you trust.

I’ve always enjoyed the show the Walking Dead; mainly for the following reason:  It gives one an opportunity to imagine what they would do if faced with the same situations.  I’ve often reflected on what choices I would make if such a scenario ever became reality and at times I have to wonder why the characters in the show make such bad decisions.  The show is both entertaining and also reminds us that the biggest threats aren’t always zombies; but instead the cruel acts people perpetrate against other people, once the rule of law is gone and the thin veneer of society has been ripped away.  The show continues to be my favorite, although I’m at a loss to explain how the writers expect us to believe that whenever there is a prolonged gunfight, the main characters never seem to run out of ammunition.  Until next time watch out for those zombies, you never know when they might show up uninvited.
